Wright Thompson is one of the most over-hyped, douchebag writers around. He's nothing but a gasbag Faulkner sycophant. His voice and his narration is pretty terrible and his pieces are pretty self-indulgent shite.
What many do not realize is that 25,000 words full of flowery language does not equate to actually getting your piece read...the true goal of a writer. It's like some antiquated parlor speak where all the "true" writers sit around and jerk each other off with their elitist "high brow" discussions.
Sorry for the soapbox, I just really hate Thomspon and writers of his ilk.
You're miserable.
Don't read it then.
I didn't read it because I have better things to do. But, I'm fine with writers who write that way and with those who enjoy it. Who cares?
I don't watch Fast and Furious movies, but I'm glad they're there for those who do like them. What's wrong with that?
You need to relax.

like a lot of the guy's stuff. But he plays the Southern writer card too much and I heard from some former co-workers and editors that he's a world-class douchebag.
Maybe, but his Tiger Woods article last year was the greatest writing in a sports piece I've ever read.

A lot of Wright Thompson haters in this thread. Which is laughable. He has millions upon millions of hits on articles. He may be an OM homer. He may be a country boy and steer way too hard into the nouveau-hippie-monied-elite-southerner deal.
But to deny his talent is idiotic.
In the literary world you had guys like Fitzgerald and Hemingway end up being world-class louts, lushes and a-holes. They committed adultery, were total boozehounds and pissed off everyone around them that ever cared for them.
Hell one of my favorite writers on Earth is Tom Robbins and his books are taught as staples in women's and gender studies curriculum at some small colleges.
That doesn't mean I don't find them wildly entertaining and the very definition of readable.
Most people who excel in endeavours like the written or spoken word, or musically or artistically in general are insufferable pricks. It's like none of you people ever spent a day around someone with a true talent for a liberal art in your life.
