And if so... when?

When I was a really little kid, I remember watching the USFL with my extended family at the camp in the spring. It was cool as shite. They built it up the right way and aside from Trump fricking it all up, they had a real shot to give the NFL a run.

Later on, I was in college during the XFL era. That too was pretty neat at first, but it was tough to stick with it long term. I think if they’d have kept it going, maybe at a smaller scale, it could have made a dent.

Is there an chance of that happening today? With Jerry trying to frick Goodell, it seems like a guy with billions could put some kind of framework together to shake it up.

Will we ever see anything like that in our lifetime?

A 6 team league that played in the spring... Short season. Maybe sign some NFL/CFL castoffs and get it on some cable network. I really think people would watch.

It would need deep pockets and a rebel to run it. But if Elon Musk can give car manufacturers a run, could no billionaire give the NFL one?

That was a Carnivale from Day 1 because Minor League football like minor league basketball doesn't sell unless it's college.

It wasn't that it really was much different despite their promoted gimmicks and cams...it was that it wasn't different.

It was just minor league football in the end.

But they treated it like a Carnival and the wrestling announcers, good lord.

When I was in HS, I remember being excited for the New Orleans Breakers. Seemed like the USFL had some future NFL stars. Too bad the league didn't last.

No, do you have any other obvious questions?

The XFL was weird... but think about what we knew of pro FB at the time. We’d all be watching the Saints every weekend on Fox and then some AFC game on CBS. Then you’d have an ESPN Sunday night with Mike Patrick that was super low-key and then Monday night - which was moderately eventful. No flex schedules. No Thursday night ball. No London ball.

I remember at the time, we’d always be flipping between Raw/Nitro and Monday night. So Vince had a pipeline into my drinking/sports watching crew at the time. We were willing to give it a shot.

That first game, we were psyched for it. But interest fell fast. If they could have made it better football, longer training camps, more regional team involvement - I really think it could have made it.

Somebody give me a billion dollars. I think I could make it work,

Billionaires usually make smart investments. With all the lawsuits and other bullshite surrounding pro football trying to start a new football league wouldn’t be a good investment. Especially when your competition already has all the best employees under contract.

Trump didn't kill the USFL...

They had to eventually go against the NFL straight up...if you play constantly in the Spring...that's an anathma to football fans.

USFL had superstars and still failed.

That's the power of history and expecations and familiarity and inherent bias in human beings that something new isn't as good as familiar.

Plus Americans love their sports history.

AFL was able to force a meger because the NFL wasn't that big a deal back then...they weren't the 90's, 2000's behemouth. AFL was a real challenger.

USFL had no shot in the end unless they challenged the NFL. Even die-hards don't want to watch football year round. Spring, Summer and Fall.
