I don't know how you could possibly read the article and come away with the impression that Manning's comments were the sole reason for his career ending.

eta: Also, I fully admit that there may be some perception bias clouding the way I view Vanderjagt. It's difficult to forget that playoff kick against the Steelers. Guy was coming off of one of the greatest kicking seasons ever, had only missed one kick the entire season, and then shanks the game tying attempt in the playoffs by about 15 yards. It was a terrible kick.

I remember him being incredibly obnoxious in his one year with the Cowboys. His attitude was one of the primary reasons Parcells let him go.
