Why does the ref put up zero fingers for 4th down and not 4 fingers?

They used to until 1968 then MLK got shot and they made it the fist.

NO. Four fingers in the air would be confused with the three fingers for third down.

Easier for fans to see, pre stadium big screens.

On a full count, umps put up 3-2 fingers, then make two fists.
