Your beloved favorite sport, college football, does alot in the name of tradition, much of which actually hurts the game much more than baseball tradition does.
And, actually, back in the 80s, most teams wore pullovers. I'm not sure what made the league go back to the button down style.

Most wore baby blue road unis as well. The button down looks classy not like a little league or rec. softball uni. It's all opinion though, I grew up in 70's early 80's and have fond memories of the pullovers. I couldn't imagine the Astros rainbow uni w/ buttons !
