I'm pretty sure ESPN pays Dan for the show and Dan pays Mike and the other producers.

ESPN is littered with nothing but sports talk based shows. As far as highlights goes, people are seeing the highlights of their teams games the moment it is over. The days of watching sportscenter for 35 mins just to see the 45sec clip of your team is long gone. There is a reason why Espnnews channel doesn't even play highlights 24/7 anymore. Remember CNNSI channel? That channel kicked the bucket well before the birth of the social media era.
