You also had every college kid binge playing NCAA Football on PlayStation

The schools and the NCAA don't understand how a simple video game can passively build interest. It taught a lot of people about mid-major conferences (and even low major).

Pay the kids for their likeness and bring the game back - watch how that slowly helps passive interest.

Conference Realignment

Spot on. This accelerated a gap between the haves and the have nots.

Yes, but I think this has been assisted by these events:

The College Football Playoff

The Pac 12 suckage has essentially rendered an entire P5 conference as worthless. This waters down the pool of good teams.

Add in the playoff, and it gives teams a mulligan of sorts. Taking 4 teams instead of 2 enhances the likelihood of a 1 loss team getting into the title game. Bama is the premier program. In the old days, an upset win over them would be reason to storm a field, burn couches, etc. In the old days, it would also hint at the chance of a new champion. Now, an upset in mid season is fun, but not the event it used to be.

Bama has the coach and program to take advantage of it. If it wasn’t them, it would simply be a title held by someone else.
