What happened to Oklahoma in 2003?

The first 12 games of the season they beat the shite out of everyone. Then, they get their arse kicked by Kansas State in the Big 12 championship, and then LSU makes Jason White looks like Cade McNown.

Does anything explain the meltdown or did they just implode?

I've always wondered this. Especially the KState game, cause that wasn't even close.

I thought LSU was definitely a better team at the end, but for the first 5/6 of that season, OU looked like one of the better teams ever.

Fun memories for me.

I lived in Oklahoma and had to deal with the endlessly obnoxious OU fans for 6 years.

In short, K-State came at White like a whirlwind. OU's line couldn't hold up. White got injured. K-State built a big lead on the back of Darren Sproles being dynamite and OU being forced to throw the rest of the night, K-State just pinned their ears back and teed off.

OU's line/we only throw it deep offense got exposed, Saban's scheme completely perplexed White and our DL teed off on their OL similarly.

They ran into a K-State team that got hot at the right time and had nothing to lose.

They were lucky to make the Nat'l Championship game imo, where they ran into a badass defense, and with Jason White not at 100% were pretty much completely shut down.

The one part I can't explain is the disappearance of their special teams those last few games. As good as their offense was, they had a special teams group of really good athletes. Was it the Texas A&M where they returned a ton of kicks for touchowns?

Probably. I remember them kind of kneeling/pushing the pile over when they were up 77-0 in the 3rd quarter.

That pretty much explains it.

Still came close to beating LSU in New Orleans which is pretty amazing looking back on it.

Each team had 1-loss and at the time the computers had more weight in the BCS and the computers don't care when you lose so they still had OU ranked highly.

Yeah I understand that much. But was OU still that high in the human polls even after that beatdown in the Big 12 CG? I still remember watching that game and being amazed at how they lost...

I think they were #3.

There were only 3 1-loss teams if I remember correctly, so you really couldn't drop them below a 2-loss team.

Bullsh!t! What game were you watching?

Sure, the final score was by a mere TD. But, it was one of the most lopsided one-score margin wins you'll ever see.

How many times did OU cross the 50 yard line? If not for Mauck's 1st qtr fumble at the OU 1 yd line on first drive, or wounded duck floaters(God bless him..a solid game manager), a punt ugly spread formation blocked punt/short field at LSU's goal line..

Your two scores, which by the way, were a 3 play/2 yard TD drive off the punt block, and 9 play/31 yard drive off a 50 yard Int return to the LSU 30.

It wasn't a close game. But that's besides the point.

A game where Jason White missed a wide open Kejuan Jones in the EZ in the 4th quarter which would have tied the game.

Would you say the LSU-Auburn game was a close game?

I would, but if you don't then I guess we have different definitions of close games.

LSU was whupped on the Plains by more than one TD..the boxscore just didn't show it. Just like Fla's win at LSU last year where LSU like OU in Nawlins 2003, couldn't barely get across the 50 hardly all game..and when did..eventually got stoned.

If not for two punts to the 1 yd line. A well-executed RB pass TD(by former HS QB). Aub kneeling at goal at game's end. It could've been by wider margin, but, not necessarily should've been.

LSU should've bested OU by more than 7, it was a riotous celebratory rout, in most all facets sans the final score and equal turnovers. Outside of a possible hail mary bomb prayer, or LSU Offense & Sp Team self-inflictions, you just knew OU had no prayer to sustain a drive incrementally vs that LSU Defense.

HUGE difference.

We never had a chance to tie up the game against UF.

OU dropped a pass in the endzone that woulda tied the game pretty late in the 4th quarter, if I'm not mistaken.

Spin it how you want, but when a team drops a pass that would tie a game in the 4th quarter, that is a close game.

LSU made an undrafted free agent look like a first round pick?

I seem to remember a much different scenario

To be fair, White was definitely a better college QB.

But the OP should have used a QB who also wasn't very good in college as a comparison, and Mcnown was good in college. Just not on the level of White.
