quote:THIS! You'll never forget it. I've been to most of the major stud farms. Visited Spendthrift when Mr. Leslie was still alive and had an unforgettable conversation with Clem Brooks, groom to Nashua. Raise A Native and Gallant Man were there, too.
Take a trip to Lexington to see the farms, food is great, scenery beautiful, and it is where you get your PHD for the horse business.
On to Claiborne where I plucked a hair from Secretariat's mane and patted Mr. Prospector. They actually let us witness a "cover" inside the breeding shed. Whoa!
Above all, you should schedule your trip around the Keeneland September Sale. The scene is reminiscent of what the French Impressionist painters would love to capture.
My claim to fame is standing next to Nelson Bunker Hunt at the adjacent urinal in the Keeneland men's room!!
I'll never forget visiting "the back" at Keeneland within arm's length of Joss Collins in his trademark multi-color striped shirt along with Vincent O'Brien in his signature straw fedora bidding millions on Northern Dancer and Nijinsky yearlings on behalf of Robert "The Gangster" Sangster. Unforgettable.
Equally unforgettable was my brief conversation with Tom Gentry. The thoroughbred equivalent to P.T. Barnum (or Billy Mays). His sale-day wardrobe was near cartoonish. In "The Blood Horse" run-up to the sale, I estimate at least 20% of the pages were full page adverts for his yearlings.
Then you go outside and see 2 guys on the tailgate of a pickup drinking beer.... one is D.Wayne Lukas and the other has that all too familiar shock of white hair.
And you'll never forget the smells inside and outside. Simply a magical place.
When you go, I highly recommend staying at a Bed and Breakfast to get the full flavor of the thoroughbred environment. The hosts are so eager to share local information.
I just can't say enough about the Lexington Horse World...

Great write up. Horse Racing is the sport that the Participants are accessible to the Public. Baffert, Pletcher, Asmussen, Bobby Flay-owner, Sheik of Dubai. Have shook all their hands.
The real stars are at Coolmore, Lanes End, Winstar, Darley, Gainsway, & Hill n Dale, etc. Make an appt at each farm. And they will give a tour and will take each stallion out for private inspection.
Merrick Inn, Malones, Tony's, Ramsay's--food to die for.
Great trip
