Precisely SCL

I was nearly a full-ride athlete but still came out of PC with $20k worth of debt (1997 dollars). My family could have never afforded to send me there as a regular student. I didn’t even have a car until late jr year. The majority of our athletes came from middle and blue color families. Not many of us came from money.

The Pioneer conference is D1 non-scholarship. Same conf as Davidson. The rest of PC sports would remain D1 in the Big South conference.

PC is in a bad way financially. PC Football became a scapegoat. Alums are furious at the lack of transparency by the administration and by a former President that pitted Academics against Athletics. It’s a very complex issue, but the bottom line is Presbyterian Football is incredibly steeped in tradition and an integral part of my alma mater’s identity. Losing the program would be devastating to student enrollment and helping fund the other sports programs

For low income student athletes, PC could still give academic scholarships the way the Ivy League does. Most of their athletes aren't paying their own way despite the lack of athletic scholarships.

The problem is PC is a regional college. Almost all of the kids there are from SC or border areas of GA and NC. They fight tooth and nail with Wofford and Furman to get the kind of kids who aren’t Ivy League, but aren’t far off. Often times, the deciding factor in whether a kid goes to PC, Wofford or Furman is who gave them the most scholarship money. If PC is giving academic scholarship money for an athlete instead of a kid who is going to go to USC Law or MUSC for med school, they will lose quality academic students. Their administration will not allow that to happen. This appears to be a move by PC to effectively get rid of the football program without ending it outright.
