Have never seen that choke before.
Von Flue did it years ago. I haven't seen it since.
It's really easy to avoid, so I'm shocked that a guy in the UFC didn't see it coming.

I think the first part answers your second part.

What was it that put him to sleep? His shoulders in the dude's throat?

People go for it all the time in training. Normally, it's done just so the guy let's go of the headlock. Typically, only guys who've never seen it are the ones that get submitted by it. That's why it's so bizarre to see a guy in the UFC get subbed by it.

Holding on to the headlock (like the guy on bottom was doing) put his own shoulder close to his neck. If you can trap the hand that's attempting the headlock, you can put pressure on the other side of the neck w/ your shoulder. That cuts off both arteries.

I've never seen it. Not in years of bjj. Then again, I've never seen anyone try to maintain a guillotine while in side control.

What a weak fight. Shields is totally outclassed here. All of his strikes are half-hearted attempts.
Posted on 3/15/14 at 9:45 pm to shutterspeed
Shields isn't even attempting to win, he's only trying to make it the distance

Really? I get newer guys and wrestlers w/ it often. The wrestlers constantly go for chin locks from that spot to try to get to their knees and the new guys...well, they're new guys.

dammit...i really wanted shields to get that guillotine after lombard mailed it in the last couple of rounds

Well that was just all-around embarrassing.

I mean, newbs always go for the headlock, but once I get them in side control, I'm already popping my head out. Never thought there was actually a choke from that position because I've never seen anyone actually do it. And, like I mentioned, I've never seen anyone successfully maintain any kind of head control while in side control. Maybe I shouldn't be so quick to pop my head out next time.
