For someone who doesn't post much, you REALLY like posting/bumping a Tulane Football thread on the More Sports Board.
As always, I sincerely appreciate the bump.

The is tigerdroppings.com's More Sports Board (not Tiger Rant, not the Recruiting Board and not the SEC Rant).
What's great about tigerdroppings.com is that fans of other schools are encouraged to join/post.
Moreover, many such posters are also fans of LSU.
If you don't like this thread, just post elsewhere...thanks.

Tulane football team says time to turn around program is now - Times-Picayune
- "We feel like we've really got to turn this thing around," senior receiver Jeremy Williams said. "We're not waiting on the future. We've got to do it now."
- Certainly, you have to figure the Green Wave is on the way up after a gruesome 2008 season, when almost every playmaker was shelved with an injury and Tulane finished 2-10, losing the final eight games...
- But why, exactly, is Tulane better?
"I just think there's continuity in what we're doing, particularly offensively," Coach Bob Toledo said. "We're much stronger than we've ever been. We've got quality depth right now, which we haven't had. We've got some guys that can back up some other people to help us to be better.
"And we've got some playmakers right now. Last year we had about two, and now we've got more. I'm really excited about this freshman class. I would venture to say that more than half of them will play and contribute greatly."
- Most times, it's not necessarily a good thing for that many freshmen to be counted on that heavily. ... But with the Green Wave's struggles last season, few positions were safe from the newcomers, and that, actually, is a good thing.
- "We have a new attitude, new approach to the game," Williams said. "We've got a new outlook in the locker room. We got rid of the bad guys, and we've been working hard."
- All of that remains to be seen. The Green Wave is 6-18 under Toledo, and the program hasn't won as many as five games in a season since 2004.

***UPDATE: Despite Alabama Offer, Gulliver Prep QB Michael Strauss Remains Committed to Tulane***
From BamaOnLine.com:
- One prospect who has received plenty of interest from Alabama is Miami (FL) Gulliver Prep star Michael Strauss, a 6-foot-3, 208-pound signal caller who committed to Tulane in June.
- Is Alabama still showing interest in Strauss since his commitment? "I'm still in touch with Alabama. I still hear from them a good bit and they continue to let me know that they are interested in me," said Strauss. "Alabama is a great program and I feel very honored to have received some interest from them."
- But while Alabama continues to show interest in Strauss, the nation's No. 41 quarterback prospect said the recruiting process has ended. "At this point, I don't think I'm going to continue the recruiting process, and that includes taking visits. My dad is very big on keeping your word and sticking with a commitment. I've committed to Tulane and given them my word that I'm going to be a part of their program and I really feel like I need to stay firm to that promise. I may take a visit to Penn because of family connections but I won't be taking any other official visits."
7/27/09: ***UPDATE: Tulane Commit QB Michael Strauss Offered by Alabama***
6/26/09: ***Tulane Football's 3rd 2010 Commitment***
From 8/27/09:
Gulliver QB Michael Strauss assumes leadership role - Miami Herald
- ...during Michael Strauss' junior season in 2008...the 6-3, 212-pound Strauss threw for a county-leading 3,113 yards and was the main component in the Raiders' run to the 2A state title game...
- With the Raiders returning only five offensive starters -- including Strauss -- and now playing in the clustered, eight-team District 8-2B, Strauss knows he must be more of a vocal leader.
- ``They're all looking up to me now -- I'm like the old vet on the offense now.'' Last season, Strauss threw 32 touchdown passes and completed 71 percent of his throws. Now he's more concerned with the final score than the stat sheet.
- Strauss, who committed to Tulane this summer, has a 3.3 grade-point average and plans to graduate in January and enroll in college during the spring. Other schools have come calling, including official offers from Alabama and FIU. But Strauss called his commitment to Tulane ``firm''.

New Wave - Many newcomers to debut Friday for Tulane - neworleans.com
- "I really believe that we're better as a football team, as a program, but we don't know how much better. And I think that this week will be a real good gauge."
- "It's a crucial game. It's not only a big game and it's at home and on TV, but it's a league game and it's a game in our division, so it's as big as it can get."
- Coach Bob Toledo plans on playing a lot of newcomers - 15 freshmen are listed on the two-deep - not to mention the fact that a lot of familiar faces are back for the first time in a while because the Green Wave lost 17 players to season-ending injuries last year.
- The influx of new talent and the return of proven producers have Toledo cautiously optimistic that his third Tulane team will be appreciably better than his second one, which finished 2-10 after losing its final eight games.
- "I think there are some guys we are definitely looking at," he said. "Shakiel Smith, young man out of Karr High School. He's going to play some safety and nickel back for us. Payten Jason, running back out of Jesuit. He's already moved up to second behind [star RB] Andre (Anderson) and if Andre puts his hand up that he's tired then I'm putting Payten in.
"DJ Banks is an explosive little guy. We're going to try and put him in different positions to let him get the ball - let him return punts. Payten will also return kickoffs. Devin Figaro, big receiver out of Lafayette, was very impressive in camp; he's done a nice job. Shane Delery, the young tackle out of Jesuit, he's going to see some playing time. But there's a bunch of guys that I think will contribute this year and I just mentioned a few of them there."
- [DJ] Banks inherited the holder's position as well when Darren deRochemont quit the team Monday to return home to Florida.
- Toledo said five players will miss the game because of injuries - TE Cody Sparks (fractured kneecap), Sule Osagiede (broken vertebrae in his neck), NT Oscar Ponce De Leon (hamstring), LB James McMurchy (ankle), and DL Tony Bryant (dislocated ankle).

Tulane's Nierman continues local gridiron success - neworleans.com
- Tulane offensive center Andrew Nierman's football résumé in the state of Louisiana is as prestigious as one can build.
Groomed from Kindergarten to Grade 12 at John Curtis Christian School in River Ridge, LA (one of the best high school football programs in the nation), Nierman was well-prepared for college football before setting foot on Tulane's campus.
Now a junior at Tulane, Nierman continues to show off his New Orleans pedigree, establishing himself as one of the Green Wave's major leaders.
- "It was pretty important for me to play football in college and it was definitely exciting to get the chance at Tulane," Nierman said. "Originally, I thought I wanted to go out of state, especially since I went to John Curtis since kindergarten. But when Tulane football called, I jumped on the opportunity to visit and cancelled my other official visit to a school up north."
- In addition to his individual desire to serve as a role model on the field, Nierman holds high hopes for the entire Green Wave unit this season.
"This year will be even better than last year," Nierman said. "I wouldn't say the work ethic is different because we've always worked hard, but the team's general attitude has changed for the better. Our morale has really improved, especially after last year's tough season. Everyone's on the same page and we're ready for the change."

Tulane Football Struggles are Same Old Story - neworleans.com
- Let's look back at Green Wave football, the last 10 years and 2 games since Tommy Bowden (regular season games) and Chris Scelfo (Liberty Bowl) led Tulane to a perfect 12-0 season and #7 national ranking.
Here's the record - in black and white.
...
The Green Wave's overall record the past 10 seasons plus 2 games is 39 wins, 77 losses.
- Bob Toledo is a good head coach. He has a good staff, one that works hard in recruiting, especially the state of Louisiana.
If Toledo can't make discernable progress in the won/loss record in year three, it is time for a change.
Not in coaches. But in commitment from his employer
Tulane Football Opens Bye Week with the First of Four Practices in Full Pads - neworleans.com
- ...the Tulane coaching staff turned up the heat on the team and gave a literal lesson in practice makes perfect to the squad with continuous reps until each play was performed correctly.
- Since the Wave does not play this weekend, the coaches went back to work on teaching fundamentals and had more time to correct mistakes.
- "We're trying to get better and that's our theme this week. We're disappointed that we're not performing better and we're moving people around. I told them we either change the plays or change the people and right now we're going to change the people."
- When Tulane takes the field against McNeese State next week at the Louisiana Superdome, a trio of players, including two starters, will suit up for the first time this season. Senior safety Corey Sonnier, senior defensive tackle Reggie Scott and redshirt-freshman Rich Bell each completed their two game suspension and are looking for their first action of the season.
Youth Movement In Store at Tulane - neworleans.com
- While the upper class (juniors and seniors) simply lacks the talent necessary to compete with solid Division One teams, Tulane has some younger players with promise. Considering the fact that his team has now lost 10 consecutive games, Bob Toledo would be well-advised to play younger players.
- On Tulane's two-deep depth chart, nearly half of the 44 players (20 total) are either freshmen or sophomores (10 offense, 10 defense). That constitutes 45 percent of the immediate contributors. It is also an indicator of the thin nature of Tulane's junior and senior classes. 30 freshmen or sophomores played for Tulane against BYU.
- This is Toledo's third year on the job. Tulane fans are yearning to see improvement, to witness tangible evidence of progress. At this point, it is hard to find. In Toledo's defense, the senior class is not of his doing. ... The seniors were recruited by Chris Scelfo and his staff.
- McNeese State is an FCS team, a member of the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly called 1-AA. Tulane is a Division One School. This is a game that Tulane should win. This is a game that Tulane must win. The losing streak should end. If it doesn't, the prospect of a disastrous season looms large.

I wouldn't call Tulane a young team. Half of a depth chart being sophomores and freshmen is common amongst most schools.
Why are they struggling this year?

The recruiting class immediately following Katrina would be true seniors or redshirt juniors this season. That has definitely hurt their depth.

quote:
Why are they struggling this year?
Well, we can only speculate, various factors exist, but I believe the loss of practice time to the flu that hit a majority of the team has played a significant role.
Some common concerns include Kemp's QB play, a dismal OL, poor red zone offense, a high number of penalties, etc. have all played a role.
That said, many teams would be 0-2 after:
- playing Tulsa's solid offensive in an opener (dismal special teams play; several red zone opportunities squandered)
- playing a Top 10 BYU team composed of fundamentally sound, older and more experienced players.

I found the Tulane board. Your arrogance is blatantly obvious there too, when it comes to the McNeese game. At least some of your buddies know what kind of team McNeese will be bringing in 2 weeks.
What's it going to be like when McNeese outnumbers Tulane fans in your own home field 3:1?

Will it be the team that really struggled against a D-II Henderson State team?
Will it be the team that upset fellow D-1AA App. State at home?
...and let's not overlook this week's matchup against D-1AA Savannah St.
Either way, the general con[s]ensus is that Tulane should win.
We'll just have to see how it plays out.
