If the price is right, they will move him. Teams salivate over that bullpen. Pads could make a killing at the deadline this year.

I agree.
I think Adams will be SD's future closer.

Chipper needs to retire, no offense.
Maybe so, but he's not which means there is no room for Pence.
So that won't be happening.
Braves will only look in CF, a corner outfield bench bat to be in there when Chip is hurt, or a RH reliever

I truly think Chipper is preventing them from having a good shot of getting to the World Series. Phillies would probably be better anyway, but the Braves staff is loaded and they need one middle of the order bat. Plus, how do we know how many more games Chipper will play?
The problem is that it would basically be mutiny to bench Chipper (even putting the money aside).

Chip is still productive...he's not the same player he once was, but he still adds a lot to the team

Chipper is not bad by any stretch, but Pence/Prado >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Chipper/Prado.
I am just saying this because I think a gamble or two has to be made to get a team over the edge when they are slight underdogs.

Completely incorrect. The middle of the order bats are there with Prado, Mac, Freeman, and now Uggla who has seemed to turn things around. This will only be helped when J Hey can get his shite together. Is Chipper the best 3 hole hitter? Absolutely not, but it's not like he's holding the team down. I'd like to see Chip retire as well, but he's still getting on base at a decent clip and still has okay power to the gaps
The middle of this order is fine. What this team lacks is someone to hit at the top of the order and get on base at a clip better than .300 which is what Schafer is doing. Find a guy that can hit at the top and have an OBP around .340 or so for the middle of this order, and the lineup will take off. This team has plenty of power.

meh...it may help a little, but not as much as you think, if at all.
Bourn would help the team a lot more

Noone will argue that. But still, the trade isn't happening so it's not even worth discussing.
The Braves will NOT trade for an everyday LF. That I can promise you.

Chip was one back of the league leader in doubles when he got hurt...he's not having a bad year
Posted on 7/18/11 at 12:22 am to The White Lobster
Pence is better than Chip, no one will argue that. Chip is still well above a replacement level player though.

Prado can leadoff, but he has definitely not got on base like he had the last two years. It is not like the Braves steal bases anyway (there is almost no reason to, unless you can steal at an incredible percentage).
Career wise, Bourn is a shitty hitter and does not get on base like a lead off man should. Maybe he has turned it around this year, but I am very skeptical of Bourn being a consistent source of offensive production and getting on base at an appropriate.
Schafer should not be hitting leadoff. That is all I have to say about that.

Yes but I think Chip is better playing everyday for this team than Pence is.
His presence in the lineup is huge

Bourn is in the prime of his career and has gotten on-base at a pretty good clip the last few years

I don't know about well above average anymore. Above average yes, but not by as much you would think. Pence is three times the offensive option that Chipper is.

There's no need to steal bases? lol

He's 28, it's when he is supposed to start hitting his prime, and he's done that. Just look at his last 3 years and what he has done, an OBP near .350 with elite speed. There's no arguing that. He's MUCH better than Schafer and would help this team tremendously, even if he only gets on base at a .330 clip. His elite speed matched up with Prado and then the middle behind him will do wonders for this lineup. Once again, a middle of the order hitter is the last thing this team needs.

You're damn right, which is why it's necessary to get someone to take his spot. He shouldn't be in a starting lineup.

That's quite a stretch.

Yes, but again. Not happening.

Quite a stretch that Pence is three times better than Chipper offensively? Actually, it is quite precise. According to metric stats, he is pretty much three times better.
Look, I am not saying that Bourn is a bad option at all, but I think that acquiring Pence over Bourn is a better idea, in my opinion. To me, Pence is a way better player and I would expect their price tags to be similar. That is why I would take Pence over Bourn. I would not want to pay all that money for a glove and stolen bases when I can get a better obp and slugging for the same price.

Pence will be quite a bit more expensive to acquire than Bourn. There's zero doubt about that.
But again, I don't know if you're not getting this. Chipper isn't going to the bench so acquiring Pence is not even worth discussing. Would he be nice to have? Sure, but acquiring a leadoff bat to take the place of Schafer makes much more sense.
Once again, this team has plenty of middle of the order bats, that's not the problem. Having guys to get on base at the top is the problem.
