They legalized zone defenses in 03 to make life more difficult for singular physically dominant entities like Shaq (since the league was moving to that style of center play) and the slasher type, ala AI. They did work to eliminate hand checking, but that doesn't help the inside game at all.
Every rule change has been to promote 3-point shooting. Every one.
I wouldn't be completely surprised to see them outlaw the dunk next.
So you are not entirely accurate in your summation of the league's style of play.

The NBA is fantastic right now. Anyone that says otherwise just doesn't like basketball.
