Thoughts on the new Nascar Charter system?

Info on new system
My takeaway is that this will protect the owners, and help them in the future secure sponsorship, which benefits the drivers also. I like reducing the field from 43 to 40.
What I don't like is the transition into the Charter. Michael Waltrip Racing is no longer a company, but yet gets 2 charters that they can sell to the highest bidder. They have been scrutinized over the years for rules violations, go bankrupt, and then essentially get bailed out by this new system. Meanwhile, Joe Gibbs Racing has a driver that was in the Chase last year (Carl Edwards) who does not receive a charter. Also, Kurt Busch isn't guaranteed a spot either. Seems like they could have done a little better job on the transition into the new system.

it is expected NASCAR will have a fixed number of charters for Sprint Cup teams -- 36 is the most common number to be rumored. Each of the 36 charter holders will be guaranteed starting spots in every race. Sprint Cup fields will be cut down from 43 to 40 cars per race, with the final four slots open to non-charter cars.

First off, they can guarantee their sponsors that they will compete in every race.
Secondly, it gives them something of value they can sell.
Right now, if a race team loses its major sponsors, it typically goes out of business. And when it does, the only value it has is its race shop -- assuming the team owns the shop instead of renting it -- and the leftover cars, tools and parts, which it is lucky if it can sell for 20 cents on the dollar.

From NASCAR’s point of view, a charter system would help attract new owners, something that hopefully will keep the sport thriving. Joe Gibbs, Roger Penske, Jack Roush and Richard Childress are all in their 70s, and Rick Hendrick is in his 60s. The only new owner to come in during the past decade and win a championship is Tony Stewart.
My takeaway is that this will protect the owners, and help them in the future secure sponsorship, which benefits the drivers also. I like reducing the field from 43 to 40.

Now that Nascar is not taking up a college football spot on Saturday afternoon, I don't care what happens to it.

So basically from that article, I know nothing about this shite

I don't get it either.
They make the qualifying issue sound like a big deal, but when was the last time a driver who had any chance of winning was not in a race?

I think it's dumb and is yet another step to alienate actual race fans from watching it.
But when last year's "champion" missed a third of the season that pretty much cemented that for me anyway.

So-called "actual" race fans are always threatening to not watch

I think it is a little high an mighty of the old guard NASCAR owners to protect what they've built. If what you have built is worth anything, it will stand the test of time. But this system rewards failures like MWR by basically giving them race spots to auction off.
I have been a lifelong NASCAR fan, but the constat rule changes has kind of turned me off over the last few years. I like that they are willing to change when needed, but I also feel like so much change whittles away at the product.

NASCAR's ratings have plummeted over the last decade...but yea I'm sure its all just empty threats.
I'll have it on if there's nothing else to watch, but outside of Daytona there's really no races I look forward to anymore. I hope to see Ryan Blaney do good this year, but speaking of that...
This charter system makes it so the start and park special #95 has a charter but the legendary Wood Brothers don't get one. Bravo NASCAR.

I hear what you are saying, but aren't they pretty much irrelevant when it comes to actual racing?
And I will say it again, I don't see how this changes anything for race day.
Only drivers on Hendrick, JGR, RF, SH and Rousch have any hope of winning. Just like it's been for the past many years.

I'm going to venture that they have a win more recently than a third of the teams who received charters (Trevor Bayne at Daytona) and they are back to running fulll-time this year.
MWR, which has been defunct for 2 years now?, receiving two charters that they can auction off is also just phenomenal.

Who got charters?

That does sound screwed up.
But again, none of this makes any difference on race day.

MWR was racing last year. They just closed up shop this offseason.
Technically Rob Kaufman owns the two charters since he was the principal of MWR.
Not sure what to think of the system. It will help some of the smaller teams with sponsorship because those teams are guaranteed a spot every week.

Thanks for the list.

Ya, there's a lot of teams on that list that won't ever win a race.

Nascars way of paying Kaufman back for bailing out that shithead Waltrip

Wasn't too long ago it was the fastest growing sport in terms of ratings. Remember that?

Wish I could see a chart for both previous growth and recent "plummeting"
With being on multiple channels, moving races to crap stations on a Monday after a rain out, to new contracts, etc. it's hard to gauge the whole thing in a credible way.
