the rulebook clearly makes a distinction about AFTER a ball is tipped

This is what I don't understand, the tip occurred after the PI. If the tip had occurred at the line or prior to the player being PI'd on, then it is not PI.
But obviously from that pic the AU player is holding onto the arms of the receiver BEFORE the TIP occurs.

By definition a ball must be catchable. It was not. It's pretty plain and simple. Your player was not impeded from going back towards the ball because he was in the air heading the other direction. The tip made the ball outside his reach

The rule book clearly states it must be a catchable ball. Thus the difference between the two plays as well

Was the receiver interfered with before the tip, that is the only question worth answering.
It's really not that hard.

I don't see what is so hard to understand.
Answer this question: When the contact occurred, was the ball still catchable?
Also, please link the rule that says defensive holding can't happen after the ball is thrown

The problem here is how leagues always talk about the "spirit of the rule". This may sound petty, but the spirit of the rule intended to protect a DB when the ball was tipped at or near the line of scrimmage and a receiver made a quick change of direction towards the deflected ball and contact was made with the ball still in the air..... It was never meant to bail out a DB downfield who had already committed a foul

Very, very good point.

That is a truly terrible call. Embarrassingly bad.
However, the 5th down is the worst officiating in the history of football as it gave a undeserved victory to a team which tied for the MNC.
