stop making shite up, this just isn't true.
Sam Snead for example had at least half a dozen years where he won 6 or more times, including a year where won or 11 or 12 times. Tiger has never won this many times in a year.
When Sam Snead played, there was hardly any competition, my statement was more geared towards today's game.
Greg Norman dominated the world rankings before Tiger came along....Norman finished with only 14 career wins, while finishing the season ranked #1 in the world 7 times.

if he has never played golf before in his life, i would bet tiger would beat him by a 100 in one round at augusta

just can't compare the two, I never understand these types of comparisons, swimming is a much more physically grueling sport. It would be better to compare Phelps to Roger Federer because of the stamina involved in both sports.
Golf is a skill sport.

tiger plays a total of 11 tourneys a year. In those days that Snead and them played they played EVERY SINGLE TOURNEY. Dont try and compare this. Tiger plays a total of 11 tourneys a year and wins 7-8 of them. Take the percentage of tourneys played vs the number of times won and i assure you Tigers percentage is 30% more than the nearest golfer.

There already was a Tiger Woods... his name was Jack Nicklaus. It’s not like Tiger is doing anything that the golden Bear hasn’t already done. Hell, I’m not even sure Tiger has been more dominant than Federer has been in tennis, though it does appear his era has come to a dramatic close.
Phelps is going to set some absurd records. He’s going to have more gold medals than anyone, more medals than anyone period, and he still has a shot at breaking Spitz’s record. Heck, right now he has broken 3 world records in 3 events. That’s just crazy.
I’m not sure how Lance is less dominant by your argument, considering he won the Tour seven straight times when no one else had ever won it more than five times. Tiger hasn’t even set the record yet. Though I would argue as great as Lance is, he was no Eddy Merckx. His record of dominance of cycling borders on obscene. He won just about every race there is, plus five Tours.
And while we’re throwing out Olympic athletes, what about Carl Lewis? He won a gold medal in four straight Olympics, and he didn’t have the benefit Phelps had of lots of similar events to win huge tallies of medals.
Until Tiger actually breaks the records, he’s not on the list of most dominant athlete ever. He’s still #2 in his own sport.

spitz won 7 gold medals in 7 events and broke seven world records. if they had the IM back then he probably could have more. not really sure what makes what phelps doing much more impressive than that (maybe the competition now).
guys, tiger is a freak of nature that only comes around once in 100 years. no other athlete can be compared to him. to be that dominant in golf in today's game is truly unbelieveable.
oh, and if your argument is that phelps wins every race he enters, why aren't walsh and may in this discussion. they have won 102 straight volleyball matches.

Are you seriously trying to argue Jack didn’t have amazing competition? He beat some great golfers. If the competition argument hurts anyone, it’s Spitz, as the level of competition in swimming has gone way up since 1972. It’s no longer the Americans and everyone else.
Phelps’ greatness isn’t just tied into these Olympics. It’s the fact he won eight medals including six golds in 2004. And, let’s be honest, he’ll probably win more golds in 2012. If he wins eight gold medals here, that’s only part of his overall greatness in his sport. I think, at the end of these Games, Phelps will be the greatest Olympic athlete of all time.
This argument that no one like Tiger comes along in 100 years isn’t true. The Golden Bear was just as awesome. And since he holds the records right now, he’s #1. Tiger is not incomparable, we have someone to compare him to. In fact, it’s the guy whose record HE HAS NOT YET BROKEN.
I think the truly incomparable guy is Eddy Merckx or maybe, to throw in team sports, Babe Ruth.

Phelps > Tiger at this point because he broke the record. Once Tiger breaks Jack's record, then you can have the discussion. Until then Phelps is better.

Swimming is a sport where it's just not possible to be the best at every single event, doesn't matter who you are. Phelps also swam an hour before the relay.

i was saying the competition argument helps the phelps case as it is a lot better now.
and as far as jack and tiger, name some stats that back that up? looking at where tiger is (age wise) and what his record is now, tiger is so far ahead of jack it is a joke. you can start with their amateur careers if you want.

There will not be another Tiger Woods ever IMO.
As I am sure they said back then, there will never be another Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, etc......
It's assonine to believe that a dominant player in any sport will ever be surpased. Records are made to be broken. Some may not, but most will.

Another thing people don't mention is that Golf is played in various weather conditions, so you have to factor that in. Also we've heard of them making courses harder because of Tiger. They never had to tweak a swimming pool to make things harder for Phelps. What's up with Tiger Proofing golf courses.lol.
It's better to compare Phelps to Carl Lewis. Tracks and Pools don't change, golf courses do.
ETA: When you have to change a golf course to make things harder for ONE man that says a lot.

Some stats to back it up? OK.
TOTAL MAJORS
Jack 18
Tiger 14
TOTAL WINS
Jack 73
Tiger 65
Until Tiger breaks the record, Jack is the man. And he's simply not incomparable because, well, the comparison is obvious.
Is Tiger great? Yes. So is Phelps.

Well, Tiger Woods is black so Phelps would beat him in swimming simply by not drowning.
kidding

Ok then. If the golden bear is so good and is still the number 1 golfer, and your saying tiger isnt their yet and yoru not sure he is going to get there, lets make a bet. By the end of the 2012 golf season, the same year PHelps will swim in the Olympics again, tiger will have broken jacks major record. how does 1k sound? Even money 1 to 1
