Bowie became a feel-good NBA story, making the league after stints in the minors and overseas. Bowie played eight NBA seasons, including 16.4 minutes per game with the 1994-95 Orlando Magic, who made the NBA Finals.

But Bowie is best remembered for his triple double on March 19, 1996, which most players, coaches, media and fans consider ill-gotten gains.

With 2.7 seconds left in a game the Magic would win 113-91 over Detroit, Bowie corralled his 10th rebound. And immediately called timeout.

Bowie knew the math. He had 20 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. This was his 82nd career start. He would make just five more. Bowie was 32 years old. The opportunity for future triple doubles were scant. This was his chance.

But Bowie had angered the masses. On the Orlando bench, coach Brian Hill was disgusted. Hill handed his clipboard to Bowie and walked away from the huddle. On the Detroit bench, Collins was so angry, he instructed his Pistons to stand courtside while the Magic did whatever they would do.

What Orlando did was draw up a play designed by Bowie. Joe Wolf tossed a length-of-the-court pass to Bowie, who tossed to David Vaughn for a dunk. Bowie's 10th assist.

Collins stormed off the court and would draw a $5,000 fine from the NBA for not defending the play. Bowie went chasing him to explain.

Remember watching this, exciting game for Bowie with an embarrassing ending.

Why was the Orlando coach mad? And the pistons coach is a bitch.

Instructing the entire team to stand courtside so the guy would have a tainted triple double?

you know how baseball has a million unwritten rules? Most sports have a couple. This is one in basketball.

I would say the steelers players that stood there and did nothing on the final play - then bitched about a call

What? Don’t try for a triple double? Or don’t take a timeout like that when you’re up big?

Unwritten rules are gay af

Sounds like the pistons should've defended the play then

Huh? Plenty of time to get a decent look at a 3 off the in bound pass.

Would love to see this board if Durant tried to pull this.

Would love to see which of his alter twitter accounts he would trot out to defend himself.

well, calling for a TO, up big, just to chase a stat is lame AF IMO.

I love baseball guy thinking that throwing at a dude's head is justified for excessive celebration on a homer.

Anyway, I don't think one is that big a deal. Collins is just a bit of a baby and probably had some old school code in his head at the time.

I seem to remember Favre colluding on an ill gotten sack for Strahan.

I don't think that was the point. Collins told them to let them do whatever it was because it was a cheesedick move anyway. The dude's own coach was pissed

So this Bowie guy is a feel good story, but Ricky Davis does the same thing and is villified?

Yeah but it's not against any rule. If you don't like it, stop them from scoring.
