Had never even heard of her. She should invest in better PEDs.

I just rewatched a decent chunk of the RG final. Dear Gawd.

Rafa didn't dominate that match because it was on clay. He dominated by being f'ing amazing at tennis. In that kinda form, they could be playing on a focking skating rink and he'd win.

So, I have expressed in the past -- and will probably express in the future -- my fatigue with the constant conversation about the state of American tennis. I guess I just don't care whether top guys are American if they are fun to watch.

That being said, I just took a look at the live atp rankings, and this is the worst I've ever seen it. Literally, ever.

23) Isner
29) Fritz
40) Opelka
50) Tennys
51) Sam Q
53) Tommy Paul
62) Tiafoe
71) Marcos Giron
74) Stevie Johnson

Those are the Americans in the top 100. Wowowowowowow.

Alex broke up with Da-veed.

Bad decision by Alex.

I'm about to make the least bold statement in the history of unofficial tennis threads.

Alex will never win a major.

Let's discuss Tennys Sandgren. I know I'm not the only one on this board who's a fan. I love his story. Dude played #3 singles at UT (granted, he probably should have been playing #2, but still), turns pro after making it to the semis of the NCAAs (losing to his teammate Rhyne Williams), bounces around the Futures and Challenger Tour for several years, finally breaks through with a big run at the Australian, and then, toughest of all, proves that it wasn't a fluke.

Here are two questions that sound like they are the same but actually aren't:
- what do we think his ceiling is?
- when he is done playing tennis, his highest ATP ranking will be ____ ? (his current highest is 41).

Discuss

state of American tennis

I guess my frustration is that when we don't have top players, the general American level of interest in the sport drops. Which is personally disappointing.

For reference, 1990:

Tennys Sandgren

has been a blast to follow over the last couple of years.

I think he is at his peak right now. If he jumps from 50 to go past his current CH of 41 I think it is going to happen in the next couple of months. He is known for his fitness and I expect him to have taken more advantage of all of this downtime than the other players on tour. Might explain why his has done his best in Australia as well. But I don't see him being able to play the consistent tennis that is required to get up in the top 40 or so.

Here is his stat line from last year, showing how fickle the pro tour is. 8 wins, $750k.

Regardless, the guy plays like every tournament might be his last, and that is what makes him so much fun to watch. Guys who peak out later have lived more lows and enjoy the highs more.

Huge win!! Takes out #1 seed Garin. A run in a tournament like this could change his whole year.

Might be the first time he has ever been ranked higher than his brother.

So the Australian Open Qualifying is being played right now in Qatar even though the AO doesn't start for a month. Crazy times.

There were a few names in the 100-200 range that I could understand it not being worth the travel for the chance, but I'm not sure about JJ Wolf. Maybe he is thinking that enough players will opt out that he will make the main draw, but that would be hard to pull off from #127. Not playing Delray Beach either.

Ever play one game for a chance to play in a Major?

quote:

Fourth-seeded Kudla downed Moroccan Elliot Benchetrit 6-4, 6-3 but the match ended in controversy. Kudla’s positive Covid test result reportedly came through with Kudla leading 5-3 in the second and, according to Benchetrit, they had to finish the game in progress.

Because world No 114 Kudla won that game, which wrapped up the match, he was declared the winner. Had Benchetrit won the game to extend the match, it would have been declared a walkover in his favour.

Apparently this gave Kudla's opponent in the next round an automatic walkover.

It's not even a controversy. He was completely cleared. It's just CNN being CNN.

Nice result from Sebastian Korda. I think he could end up being the real deal.

I know it's a bit premature given the delay on the main draw start, but I'm gonna go ahead and fire up an Aussie Open thread.

Here is the link to it:
