I assure you I’m not trying to be edgy or cool. I’m on an anonymous message board posting an unpopular opinion. Not sure how doing that is designed to make me endearing to a bunch of other anonymous strangers who don’t share my opinion.

Do they? I’ve been to the US Open a handful of times and I don’t recall the national anthem ever playing before a match.

Really?
I have as well
And they’ve played it

That’s the opening ceremony.

So maybe the nba and nfl should have an “opening night” where they sing the anthem and then they don’t thereafter? Would that be ok?

For some things, we’re fine if you don’t sing the anthem, but for others we’re not.

Solo sports? That’s ok. No need.

Team sports? You had better sing that anthem!

Unpopular sports? That’s ok. No need.

Popular sports? You had better sing that anthem!

Why is it just sports? Why not sing the anthem at every reasonably large gathering?

You’re the only one that brought these up
This is about the NBA here.

Nope.

I brought them up because why are we treating the nba any different than any other sport? It’s stupid.

This is pointless. Why you’re holding the nba to some stupid standard because you want to feel patriotic is beyond me. That’s not the nba’s obligation.

Does this actually bother? Just curious.

Like many things in this country and world, things happened that randomly became traditions. The National Anthem is a battle song. It’s about persevering, with the flag still waving. I think there can be a connection to that and sports.

The reason we are fine with some and not others is because of these random traditions that have formed. It’s not that hard to comprehend.

Why do people eat turkey on Thanksgiving? Why do we give presents at Christmas?

Why is the NBA hoop 10 feet when it’s clear athletes can jump higher? Maybe we should raise it to 11.

Why does LSU still use H style goalposts?

Some of these are irrelevant in the grand scheme, but traditions nonetheless.

I’d feel the same if they did this for baseball or football. Traditions have been established. Is it hurting anybody? If not, why erase it?

And I wouldn’t pout if those traditions changed for various reasons that were impacting the people experiencing those traditions.

Is it accomplishing anything? At this point the anthem, either by participation, kneeling, or declining participation, is pissing more people off than it does otherwise.

Does it matter? Does it need to accomplish something? If it’s unimportant, why change tradition?

That’s because much of society lacks education. You shouldn’t do away with it because of ignorance.
