My brother and I had an after school paper route when I was in middle school. We were avid readers in my house and had numerous subscriptions. With my route money, I got a subscription to Sports Illustrated and Rolling Stone. I was a loyal subscriber for almost 20 years to both. Rolling Stone was always left, but by the 2000s, music started taking a backseat to politically driven “articles” (op-eds). Sports Illustrated took a little longer, but eventually went that way also.

This is the issue that solidified my decision to cancel Rolling Stone.

This was the one for Sports Illustrated. I’m not a climate change denier, but I didn’t buy a sports magazine so I can read political articles.

Technology has been the biggest disrupter to print journalism. However, the publishers and owners of these media companies doubled down on stupidity and arrogance. They truly believed their loyal readers would pay them for the privilege of having a certain narrative on everything crammed down their throats.

as a teenager one of my highlights was getting the SI out of the mailbox every Friday afternoon

later on we were so excited when our friend Pete McEntagart left the Lafayette Daily Advertiser to write for SI. He had made the big time in our eyes.

Hell, us Boomers made that magazine. I subscribed for years. Many years ago, I had this one friend that was so tight with his money, he squeaked. His one financial exception was…a SI subscription !

Damage is already done. The brand and its reputation got leeched down to the bone by new ownership in the last few years it limped along.

I would go up to the library after school to read this when I was a youth. The journalism and photography was amazing then. A few years later, I bought a subscription for a couple of years. I spent many a night reading them. Dr. Z's NFL predictions was one of my favorite sections.
