Local developer Doug Manchester has contacted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressing a desire to build a privately-financed stadium in Mission Valley.

Manchester, the former owner of The San Diego Union-Tribune, told Goodell he had “assembled a powerful group of associates” who will develop the land on which Qualcomm Stadium sits and “construct a new 70,000-seat stadium and surrounding development.”

An NFL spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter. Manchester declined to comment.

Significantly, the letter said the project could “provide an immediate alternative” for the Raiders if their stadium proposal in Las Vegas falls through. The Raiders maintain they are still working toward moving to Las Vegas despite two potential financial partners withdrawing. League owners are set to vote on their possible relocation at a meeting in late March.

I'm pretty confident there isn't an NFL team out there that "needs" public funding to build a stadium and stay in town.

They'd have to tear down Qualcomm first since it's effectively in the same neighborhood.

Why does it seem like these people pop up as soon as the team leaves town, like isn't it a little late?

Papa Doug wants in on that land. This is just to block the MLS proposal that was presented the second the Chargers left

In fairness, he may have wanted to wait until the shitty team left town and then try to poach a better one.

LA and football has been the biggest cluster.
LA does not need 2 teams.
The Chargers were fine where they were and Oakland needs a team as well.

there is no way 2 teams stay in LA longterm.

How it should always be. Frick this American owner way of thinking that taxpayers should pay for their shite stadiums while they sit pretty with no expenses.

The other owners would never approve this move. In their minds, it would set up a bad precedent.
