I'm pretty sure most people pointed out their problems more than anything. That administration has been in the way for a long time. Their facilities lagged tremendously. Despite all of that, it didn't take much to build small chunks of momentum at times. Randy Shannon recruited the #1 class in the country in 2008, even after a poor 2007 season. The potential has always been there.
