Those aren't arbitrary. Ohio State has won less than ten games twice in the last 15 years. They've been to a bowl every year but one since the 90s, and were undefeated in that one year. Two national championships in that time, NFL talent, top recruiting classes, etc.

It is somewhat interesting that your list is absent teams like Alabama and LSU.

Washington doesn't look anything special after Rutgers losing to Eastern Michigan...

I mean, if you want to bitch about benefit of the doubt and preseason ranking stagnation...look at Washington.

They got plugged in there and haven't moved and haven't done anything to justify the ranking except not playing ranked opponents.

But all preseason is based off of last year...

So all the playoff teams were preseason Top 10 and the Rose Bowl teams, etc.

Washington might actually have to wait until week 7 or 8 until they have a chance to drop a spot in the polls.

You wanna bitch, bitch about Washington getting two years in a row a Golden Willy Wonka Ticket to the playoffs.

Osu only drops to 8 after getting whipped at home. Lol

Oddly enough I agree with you. If I put OSU where I think they truly belong I would put them about 18th. It is a flaw in the polls. Keeping in mind that you are the least objective person when it comes to evaluating OSU.

If any p5 team is 10-2, with losses to a p5 conf champ (looking at you okies) and div rival, they are in top 10,

Gotta get to 10-2 first. Road games at Iowa, Nebraska and Michigan. Home against Penn State. It was already a tough schedule and with the current state of the offense and the problems in the defensive backfield it's looking even tougher. I could see a couple more losses.

I dont think rankings are a joke in week 7.

It will all come out in the wash.

Sagarin will be able to tie it all up by week 7.

Notre Dame was 4-8 last year and were ranked in the top 15.

Everyone knew Texas was in the middle of a major overhaul, and they were still in the preseason top 25.

The same rationale applies to them. Alabama will be preseason #1 as long as Nick Saban is there, even if they were losing 21 starters.

Want to know why there are preseason rankings? Because of threads like these. The rankings generate debate. Debate is entertainment. College football exists to entertain.

Every sports website has NFL power rankings at the beginning of the season. The difference is, the league doesn't make them binding or let them determine playoff order.

If they did, the Patriots would finish 8-8 and make the playoffs over the 11-5 Jaguars because "everybody knows if the Patriots and Jaguars played 10 times on a neutral field, the Patriots would win 8 of them."

I think they are okay. My top 10 would look like:

1. Oklahoma
2. Alabama
3. Clemson
4. Oklahoma State
5. Penn State
6. USC
7. Washington
8. Wisconsin
9. Ohio State
10. LSU

Rankings would be so much better if there were no preseason polls.

Everyone always says that but when the BCS had that other poll that came out mid season it pretty much mirrored the AP and coached poll. When we get to mid October please point out what teams should or would be ranked lower if not for preseason polls.

Oh and PS The polls don't matter anymore the playoff committee doesn't adhere to the rankings

The playoff committee is not bound by the polls and has proven it.

Exaggerate much? Please give a credible example of that kind of poll disparity out side of lesser division teams i.e. Having 2 loss BCS conference teams ranked over an undefeated MAC or SunBelt doesn't count because those teams are better.

But here's the problem. Ohio State finishes 10-2 but began with a #2 ranking. They will stay in the top ten the entire year.

Meanwhile (hypothetically), a team like Minnesota finishes 10-2 as well, but they weren't ranked in the preseason. They won't even be ranked until a month or so into the season, and they'll be lucky to break the top ten by the end of the year.

Because of that, Ohio State gets a New Years Six invite and they play in the Rose Bowl because they're Ohio State and they've been a top ten team all year. And Minnesota goes to the Alamo Bowl because who the Hell is Minnesota?
Not always true. In 2014 Mississippi State was unranked and shot up to number 1 by mid October. SEC bias could have played into that, but still.

I wouldn't say that based on this past weekend. Only thing Saturday night proved was that tOSU's offense is still shitty and outside of their defensive line, their defense is craptacular as well. What we do know is that now OU will probably go undefeated unless TCU can knock them off. As of right now I have OU and Clemson as locks for the playoffs as well as USC

That's possible but also Ohio State brings fans and TV ratings that Minnesota probably won't and if both are 10-2 but neither won the conference then why shouldn't Ohio State go over them? If Ohio State was 8-4 and was ranked over a 10-2 conference team you'd have a beef but if both are 10-2 Ohio State probably is better.
