I don't follow the sport, but I'm curious on a few things from those that do..

How do you go about picking a specific driver to root for?
Are those that root for the Jimmie Johnsons/Jeff Gordons/Dale Jrs, etc. viewed differently than those that root for a team that hasn't had substantial success or are popular?

Im a new fan to NASCAR, but I'm a fan of the sport not a specific driver. I just like to see a good race. Im not interested in learning the mechanics of the racecar or how points are tallied. For some reason I just like to watch the races.

Typically pick a driver who maybe has local roots or exemplifies a style you like, or for some people have a sponsor you like or drive a chevy/ford, etc.

And I would say that fans of Hendrick drivers (which is JJ/Gordon/Jr/Martin) are looked at like Duke/UNC, Yankee, Lakers, etc., fans.

I started watching about 4 years ago and went into it knowing nothing. Watched Daytona and chose the guy who had my favorite # which is 17 and my favorite sponsor which was Miller Lite so I rooted for those 2.

My only really interest in NASCAR involves Dave Blaney (grew up about 15 minutes from his hometown) and Tony Stewart, but both mostly for their dirt track racing roots.

I chose mine because he's a relative. Plain and simple. Once he officially calls it quits, I won't watch anymore.

I'm not a NASCAR fan by any means but Sam Hornish Jr. grew up right near my hometown, so it's nice if he does well, though I haven't followed anything he's done since he left Indy racing.

A small town near Defiance, yes.

While we're talking about it, Chad Billingsley is from Defiance, so they have a little notoriety in a couple different sports.

Just follow the sport for awhile and you will figure out who you want to root for.
