I understand that it is the rule but why?
How can you be called down in the end zone you are defending with possession of a live ball that became live outside of the end zone and it not be a safety?

I wondered the same thing. That just felt like a safety.

It was odd. I always thought if you fumble it into your own end zone it was a safety

It wasn't a fumble, it was a muff. This means the returning team never controlled it. Rule should be changed that if it's muffed into the end zone and recovered by the returning team it comes back to where it was first muffed.

Because no one had possession of it until it had already entered the end zone.

People with muffs are the worst
