Question about Field Goal Kicking in NFL

I was just watching a video about some kid kicking a field goal 80 yds on the practice field. Obviously this only worked because the trajectory is different without a defensive line there to block it.
However, it got me thinking. I know the usual setup is 7 yds behind the line of scrimmage when kicking a field goal, but I don’t think there’s any actual rule how far back you can setup. I was wondering would it be possible to set the ball up further back from the LOS in order to increase the distance by changing the trajectory? If you miss, you still turn the ball over where the ball was kicked but this would allow you to take longer chances. Thoughts?

The directional margin of error is much lower. At 80 yards you have to kick within a 4 degree angle to get it between the uprights.
80 is close to the max distance. You have to hit exactly the tight part of the ball with exactly the right part of the foot and the foot needs to be moving about 53 mph at the point of contact.
There are good YouTube videos on the physics.

I believe a pro could do all of those things.

The drop kick is the wave of the future. Gavin Lasseigne of Nicholls State will revolutionize this. Trust me.

Do those count for field goals?...

The center can't accurately snap the ball backwards 20 yards. The further back you have to snap it, it gets pretty much exponentially harder to make an accurate snap.
The low arse odds of making a super long FG combined with the low arse odds of making a good snap to even try the kick make the purposed play completely stupid. You're better off punting or trying a hail mary.

If you miss you also give the other team the ball well within their FG range.

Time to sign Carli Lloyd. Sounds like you just figured out the system

There are rules for what makes a scrimmage kick formation legal.

The drop kick counts just as much as the “regular” kick, except the drop kick is a throwback to the glory days of football... when the game was played by real men.. and not dominated by divas and decided by referees.

Don't they snap it 15 yds to the punter on a consistent basis?

Where is the rule that says how far back you must set up? I don't see anything that specifies the distance of the kicker from the ball.
quote:
Item 2: Field Goal or Try Kick Formation.
When Team A presents a field goal or Try Kick formation:
A Team B player, who is within one yard of the line of scrimmage, must have his entire body outside the snapper’s shoulder pads at the snap.
No more than six Team B players may be on the line of scrimmage on either side of the snapper at the snap.

A lot more margin for error snapping to someone that is standing up and not kneeling. Not tom mention needing to get the ball down properly so the kicker even has a chance to hit the perfect kick that would be required. all with a rush coming at them. What could go wrong
