The Fed-Safin Aussie epic is maybe the highest quality tennis I've ever watched.
I didn't watch that match. I wish I would have. When Safin was on his game, he was as good as anybody in history. Safin should have been historically elite; he had every physical gift a tennis player can have. He was a heavyweight that moved like a lightweight and his strokes were every bit as fluid as Rios/Fed (except that his backhand was twice as good as Fed's).
It shows you the mental aspect of the game. That's the difference between winning two majors and winning ten.
All this said, I'll always be a Safin fan.

I think he'll win a Wimbledon at some point. He's better than Novak on grass, and with Nadal's injuries and Fed's age it seems like he'll get one at some point
Agreed. I think he'll win Wimby once. I wouldn't be surprised if he won Wimby and then said "frick it, I'm out!"

I really like this description from Peter Bodo:

The fact is, there have always been two Andys out there—the brilliant shotmaker whose game was jazz compared to Federer’s Mozart or Nadal’s heavy metal, and the moody self-sabotaging outsider who carried the weight of an entire nation—nay, kingdom—on his angular shoulders, and who specialized in making more rather than less complicated.

Not saying Novak is NOT cramping, But a very good tactical ploy by him.
