It's also because Notre Dame draws TV ratings, which ESPN would love to have, especially for the first year of the expanded playoff. And playoff selections are made by committee members who may have individual biases while using nebulous criteria. It's a good thing the NFL has set-in-stone tiebreakers for playoff berths. Otherwise, the Cowboys would be in the playoffs every year regardless of whether they deserve it.

Of course, the NFL has its own credibility problem with its officiating influencing games to preferred outcomes from time to time.
