Go woke go broke

Monday’s Raiders-Chiefs NFL Christmas Day game averaged a combined 29.17 million viewers across CBS (28.28M) and Nickelodeon (893K), per Nielsen fast-nationals — the largest Christmas Day NFL audience since Bengals-Vikings on ABC in 1989 (33.06M), pending full results from Christmas Day

The Raiders’ upset win, which peaked with 37.16 million, increased 13% from Packers-Dolphins on FOX in the same window last year (25.92M).

Pending results for the rest of the Week 16 slate, Raiders-Chiefs delivered the fourth-largest audience of the NFL season — trailing the two Thanksgiving afternoon games (Washington-Dallas: 41.76M; Lions-Packers: 33.70M) and the Week 12 national window three days later (mostly Bills-Eagles: 30.90M).

In other Christmas action, the Ravens-49ers Monday Night Football game averaged 27.24 million across ABC and ESPN Deportes — up 59% from Buccaneers-Cardinals on NBC’s Sunday Night Football last Christmas (17.15M) and the NFL’s fourth-largest Christmas audience. The Ravens’ blowout win, which peaked with 31.4 million from 9:30-9:45 PM ET, trails only Eagles-Chiefs earlier this season as the most-watched regular season edition of MNF 1996.

Christmas ratings for the NBA are not out yet

Well with 100 million extra people in the country you’d expect numbers to go up

And it also seems like the nfl has certainly cut back on the anti-USA stuff

The Christmas Eve game in Denver had the best nfl atmosphere I've seen in years. Everything about it (the weather, the colors, the drama, the timing, etc) was an absolute grand slam from a television production standpoint on many people's favorite night of the year.

i'm happy that the NFL decided to go in on christmas day so sports fans have something decent to watch at home with the fam. NBA isn't watchable and too cartoonish

At this point this phrase is only used to be ironic. The only time it seemed to actually work was Bud Light but they are clearly still going strong despite the drop in sales. The NFL and NBA are more profitable than ever since they went “woke”.

Advertising revenue is not simply a numbers game.

For example, the eyeballs watching the Masters on Sunday afternoon probably represent 30% of the total wealth in this country. The eyeballs watching an NBA December game probably represent 1% of the wealth in this country.

It's not just how many are watching but "who" is watching. Lot of dudes who buy a shiny, new F150 every five years or white collar types looking to move their 401K = great. Unemployed welfare cases who steal everything they own = not so much.

I mean, no major professional sports league is going to "go broke" even if they sacrifice a 12 year old virgin during halftime, but the economics are a lot more nuanced than simply spitting out some doctored Nielsen ratings. And the NFL dropped 90% of the woke crap the moment the fury died down and shoved it in the closet with Kaepernick.

Everything on TV wants a younger demographic for obvious reasons
