re: Looks like A&M will continue to be

For much of the same reason they stayed last year.
1) The Presidents and Regents of the Texas schools would prefer to stay together given a bolstered conference, with greater revenues (preferably equal revenue sharing).
2) Whether A&M announces today or May 2012 makes no difference. The deadline for announcing and voting a move to another conference for the 2013 season is June 30th, 2012. I can tell you AD Byrne and Loftin don't want to announce prior to the 2011 season due to ramifications it may have on our season. Distractions, favorable interests to the parties wanting to keep the Big 12 together, etc.
3) There were a few reasons for not leaving this past spring. A) Beebe and Co. promised the increased revenue EQUAL to Texas and OU. B) Despite the LHN, second and third tier rights to TV were REPORTEDLY going to be increased and distributed unevenly to OU/A&M and the rest. It would offset the Texas $300 mil over 20 years quite a bit, especially considering IMG gets 25% of that $300 mil.
In the end, Beebe hasn't delivered anything in paper form and right after the June 30th, 2011 deadline, the LHN announced a second conference game and High School games (nationally) for the network. With the combination of no results from Beebe and this, it sent A&M's admin over the edge.
A&M was never about leaving on its own for the sake of leaving. They would prefer to be with Texas, Tech and Baylor in the same conference if it meant equal footing in terms of revenue for A&M. Alas, that's not the case, and A&M has options.

It will get interesting. I still think that the NCAA will not issue a formal ruling and in very late August, ESPN will announce that high school games will be broadcast on the LHN. A&M will have a hissy fit but the gauntlet will be thrown down. I still say A&M is stuck because of Baylor. We'll see......

Yes, I expect the NCAA to say its okay to have the high school games.
A&M won't vote on anything until after the 2011 Football season. I can guarantee that.
I stand by the fact politics will never be brought up in this.

What kind of odds would you give on A&M deciding to leave on its own, but then Texas, OU, and okie st. following them to the sec?

SEC is the snake lying in the grass.
Watch Slive screw A&M and pull Texas and OU instead

Texas will never be apart of the SEC. Neither wants the other.

I doubt Texas comes to the SEC. They want special treatment and will be against equal revenue sharing.

Yep. Plus Texas would never get the 3/4 vote (9 of 12 members) to approve of their membership.

I have a feeling the Pac-16 will happen if A&M really does leave for the sec. I don't see OU separating from UT, thus the pac picks up UT, OU, TT, and okie st.

This. Besides, it would be terrible for the conference. There are too many big time progams for one conference as it is

God, Colorado would be pissed if this happens...

Why do you think so?

They don't care for Texas either or really ANY of the Texas schools.
Posted on 7/22/11 at 1:24 pm to Ball Gravy
Ah I see. I guess I should have figured that.
ETA: The former Big XI always puzzled me. None of the schools ever seem to like each other.

The President of the University of Texas is a Cal Berkeley grad and has a hard-on for Texas to be in the same conference with Cal, Stanford, etc. I will never completely discount the possibility that the Pac 12 might bend the rules to allow Texas to join & keep the LHN but I doubt it.
Texas will likely become an independent for football and set up annual games with other indys like BYU, ND and Army (BYU and ND games are already on future schedules).

Yep, Powers has basically said that the SEC is a shite academic conference, despite the fact that its academically superior (top to bottom) than the Big 12 or Big 12-2.

Various ESPN networks have been showing HS football for years. Te NCAA is fine with it. The LHN is completely owned by ESPN.
ESPN can show HS games, that's not the potnetial issue. The LHN maybe owned by ESPN, buts its branded as a netowrk for one specific school and the talk was they would show games featuring UT committs.
That's very different than ESPN 2 showing Katy vs Nothshore or John Curtis vs Evangel or something like that.

Twice, in the instances I mention above, Texas and A&M's interests have lost out in a pissing contest to Baylor.
There was definatley political pressure when the Big 12 was formed to bring Baylor, but I disagree that UT and A&M lost out. The issue was who was going to be the 4th team joinging them and TT. At the time the Gov and Lt Gov were Baylor grads. It wasn't BU vs UT/A&M, it was BU vs TCU/UH.

In all fairness, if you are questioning this, you don't know the facts. You need to spend some time on Google
In other words you have no facts to back up your claim.

Pac-10 commisioner Larry Scott: 'Tsunami of Texas political pressure' led to deal falling apart

"Number One, I think there was a tsunami of Texas political pressure from Texas A&M and Baylor,"
note he says pressure from A&M and Baylor.
BG would know more than me, but my understanding was A&M was not that hot on the Pac 16 plan and were more interested in the SEC.
At the end of the day, Baylor is not that attractive to other conferences and an all Texas conference is not viable. They can bloviate all they want, they can't stop progress and its doubtful the Big 12-2 can last long term.

I should correct my statement about Powers. He probably realizes the SEC is better top to bottom than the Big 12-2, but if he's going to move conferences it sure as hell isn't going to be a lateral move. It will be upwards to the Pac 10 or Big 10, but preferably Pac 10.
