am just getting into this thread, and havent read all 3 pages. But i thought DEI (Dale Earnhardt Inc) owned the number 8, which is why Dale Jr started using 88. Am i wrong?
DEI (run by Teresa Earnhardt) owned the DEI/Bud 8 (the specific font that was on the Budweiser car) and kept it trademarked until last year. Teresa opted not to renew the trademark, at which point Dale Jr. applied for it and got it. Now Dale Jr. and JR Motorsports can use the DEI/Bud 8. Dale Jr. has been using it for his late model that he races and JR Motorsports is using it on their #8 Xfinity Series car. Also, Richard Childress Racing currently has the rights to use the #8 in the Cup Series (Kyle Busch drives that car), but RCR has their own font for the #8.
As mentioned above, Lamar Jackson’s contest was related to the 8 font that JR Motorsports was using before Dale Jr. got the DEI/Bud 8 trademark.
