re: Lakers - Hornets - Game 1

The Hornets brought their A game defensively. But the thing is, they usually do.
They made Gasol a jump shooter. frick, even Bynum took two 15-foot jumpers. The only guy who was getting to the goal/the foul line was Kobe. And that was because Ariza was picking him up way too far away from the goal, allowing himself to get picked off by screens and give Kobe wide open court to drive. I expect the Hornets to make an adjustment there. The only thing the Hornets kind of struggled with was defending the ball screen. And in this situation, I don't think it's that hard of a fix.
I suspect Gasol will try to be a lot more aggressive in game 2 and that will probably get the Hornets bigs in foul trouble. But with Okafor, Landry, Gray, Bdenga (whatever his name is), and Andersen, we have more bigs than people think. It also helps that Okafor was so effective guarding Bynum when both were in the game.
The Lakers shot a lot of jump shots, but I don't think they were necessarily settling. The Hornets weren't going to let Shannon Brown, Lamar Odom, Ron Artest, etc. drive by them. Those guys were going to have to beat them from the mid-range. shite, look at Gasol's attempts. 1-2 at the rim, 1-2 from 9 feet and in, and then 0-5 from outside of 10 feet. New Orleans made him a jump shooter. The Hornets were keeping their man in front and doing a great job of contesting shots. Only Kobe was getting to the rim, and that was due to the ball screen defense, which should be an easy fix, like I said.

Odom had ZERO attempts from 10 feet and in, and only ONE attempt from 15 feet and in. He shot FIVE threes.
Hornets defense came to play today.

Two or three were in garbage time with less than a minute left.

Without a doubt. Plus, Paul and Gray were the difference makers. I really anticipated that the Lakers front court would have a field day once Okafor got into foul trouble. I was wrong for sure, but obviously Gasol played about as well as Kwame Brown today.
By the way, a few days ago I said that the Lakers will win this in 5 (it will probably now be 6, IMO), but I also said that Paul would regain his role as the best point guard in the league. It was half joking, but if he can stay healthy, then CP3 is better than Rose, IMO.

Hornets were +25 when Gray was on the court. Incredible.
Amazingly, we were -16 when Okafor was in.

Two were. And even still, he took zero shots from 9 feet and in, and one shot from 10-15 feet. We made him a jump shooter.

Yeah, who would have thought that. I am curious to see how Gray plays in game 2 for sure, especially with that last minute injury, so it may not be a fair indicator of performance.

I just thought it was a little silly to point out his five three's when 40% of them were non-consequential. The Hornets did the same to Gasol, which was even more impressive.

Still. Odom took 3 threes. That's a good number.

True, but if he is open, then that is not too bad for the Lakers. Either way, they are down 1-0 and LA other than Kobe and Artest needs to wake up and not get dominated by what should be an inferior team.

I didn't grow up in Baton Rouge city limits, guess I can't be an LSU fan.
I also didn't grow up in New Orleans, guess I can't be a Saints fan.
I'm fricked, guess I can only root for my high school athletics.
ur logic is magical

That's the argument I used when people criticize me for being a fan of the Cavs/Heat/Thunder/Yankees/Colts, etc. I have a lot of teams

I can understand people on here calling out bandwagon fans, that pick a team at playoff time, and worship them.
But if someone has legitimately been a fan for most of their life of a team, who cares?

According to Monty Williams Gray has a mild ankle sprain and should be available for game 2. It looked a hell of a lot worse than that
I'd just rest him. In the NBA playoffs, the big market, high seed, defending NBA champ has virtually 0% chance of losing at home back to back.

Don't know if its been mentioned but Jarrett Jack played lights out today as well. The fact that the hornets extended their lead several times with Paul resting was huge.
