I realize it is not exactly the same, the point is it is an attitude. He isn't getting into the fine details of team play and strategy, he is speaking in a way that would take a little more "close reading" from us.

Like the commercials that say "fall down 7 times, get up 8," we don't really say aloud "that's stupid. What if I broke my leg on the last fall and I can't stand?" Or "if I fall 7 times shouldn't I just get back up 7 times? How could I possibly get up more times than I fall?"

It is the spirit of the statement that makes sense moreso than the literal
