If Sabonis has anywhere near the athleticism Bender had, he would have been a great center. Very good passer and played well around the basket. He had some Vlade passing skills and a pretty good hook shot if I remember correctly.
Bender was an athletic SF/PF tweener that was well... bad.
Arvydas' athleticism is getting a bit of a battering here; he was a very good athlete.
Sabonis had a catastrophic injury-- a devastating Achillies injury, in the days where that usually spelled 'career ending'-- yet managed to play at an elite level internationally for 10 years, before transitioning to a pretty effective NBA career for seven years, despite being a shell of his younger self.

I think you misunderstood my post. In comparison to Bender, it was no where close. For a 7'3 270 pound true center, he was plenty athletic. A little stiff, but that's understandable for a man his size.

He didn't play a lot when he was healthy because he wasn't very good. Role player at best
He didn't play much when we was young because 1. He was 18 damn years old when he came into the league. 2. He was behind Reggie Miller, Jalen Rose, Al Harrington, and Austin Croshere. All 4 were better than him at the time because he was so raw. How is this so hard for you to understand/

I said he had great skill and coordination for a guy that was 7'3". As much as you want to discount that, it is a fact.
I never said he didn't have good skill and coordination. You said it was off the charts for a 7 footer. I said it wasn't. There were players before, during, and after his tenure in the NBA that were just as and more skilled of the same height range. I never once said he wasn't talented. Just that he wasn't THAT talented and definitely not that rare either.

You are ridiculously intellectually dishonest. Bender had very few opportunities because of all of his injuries. Sabonis didn't have any injuries of note when he came over and he only played over 30 mpg once in his NBA career.
Are you a moron?
Sabonis had a achilles injury that the russians didnt let heal properly. He had another ruptured achilles and he had other leg and groin injuries from the russians playing him hurt for years.
quote:
Whitsitt asked Portland’s team physician, Dr. Robert Cook, to take a look at Sabonis’ X-rays before he arrived. Cook asked Whitsitt if he was sure his new player could play. “He said that Arvydas could qualify for a handicapped parking spot based on the X-ray alone,” Whitsitt said.
yeah he didnt have any injuries of note when he came over here. Bender was out of the league the first time at 24 and came back and played a half season at 29 then was out of the league for good. Sabonis didnt even get to the nba till he was 31.
You have no idea what you are talking about

I remember when Sabonis first arrived in the NBA. He was quite possibly the most banged up big man I can ever remember... which made it even more amazing that he was as effective as he was. His passing was absolutely ingenious, the way he conserved his body while still being an effective low post scorer and rebounder was brilliant, and he made Portland a much better team every time he was on the floor.
Anyone who knew the slightest about sports could tell that there was a magnificent basketball player inside that shell of a body. I really wish I had seen him in his prime.

Bender never really had a chance. He just drank too much to be successful.

Not to get off topic, but when I hear the name Jonathon Bender I think of the Breakfast Club.
