Does Rice get the credit he gets now if you take away the QB's and Taylor? I also think that the best WR isn't Moss but either Largent, Warfield, or Hutson. Before you say numbers etc, you can't compare numbers of these guys due to eras.

Rice is the Curt Schilling of Pro Football.

Nobody workes as hard as he did to get where he did, he was the only one who "did it the right way"....frick him and his sanctimonious bullshite. I, for one, am glad he was turned down as the new WR coach for LSU.

This sir is an excellent post.....

Jerry Rice getting a job in broadcasting is a slap in the face to everyone who actually WORKED to be a broadcaster

Him playing football for 20 years makes him slightly qualified.

"It was hard for me to swallow because I was not as talented and I had to work harder," Rice said. "To see a guy with that much talent not give it 100 percent, it was almost like a little slap in the face. But Randy was Randy." [...]

Sometimes you'd get the unbelievable guy, the amazing guy. Other times you'd get the guy that took a couple plays off."

ive been to 80+ NFL football games in my life....90% of them at LP field...and without a doubt the best WR as far as route running, speed, hands, smarts, the total package...that i saw was Donald Driver. Seeing him in person running posts, corners, post corners...is a treat

Jerry got a degree in broadcasting? Nope Jerry taking a job from someone who actually worked at perfecting their craft is a slap in the face to those who put forth that effort.... If Jerry can share his opinion on Randy Moss the former NFL player, why can't I share my opinion on Jerry Rice the Broadcaster?

Because attack on Jerry Rice the ESPN ANALYST is an ignorant one. Half the analysts on ESPN are former players who dont have broadcasting degrees because you dont need a broadcasting degree to work as an analyst. The fact that rice played 20 years in the league more than makes him qualified to commentate on ESPN's NFL live, such is the reason that former players like Tedi Bruschi, Marcellus Wiley, Mark schlerif--just to name a few--are all espn analysts.

Some guy who wants to be a sports broadcaster or sports analyast can "perfect his craft" all he wants, but that doesnt make him more qualified to speak about a sport than a person who actually played the sport at the highest level for 15+ years

Other than to reassure his own greatness, why is he giving his opinion at all?

Damn, that is a pretty unlucky string of 80+ games to attend.

Moss might not be the greatest, but he is one of the greatest.

Lazy? Yeah he didn't try 100% all the time but at the talent level of the NFL u don't get to be one of the greatest and dominate line he did if you are lazy.

You think he held a press conference to rag on moss? He was likely asked a question and answered it honestly. I'm not a huge fan of Jerry post playing days, but taking issue with what he says here is laughable.

By the way, Moss wasn't even the best receiver of his generation--that was T.O. And it was solely because he cared more. Moss might be the most talented football player of all time. But he ain't close to the best.

So by this statement you made, Rice played with potentially 3 HOF Recievers? I think Taylor should go in, as well as Timmy B, and TO. I think that Rice is still very bitter about TO going for 20 catches on Jerry Rice day at Candlestick, breaking a NFL record for Recpt in a game.

FWIW Hutson said Rice was the GOAT

As did Lance Alworth

Can't believe people are actually arguing about this

(And even Largent himself would never claim he was better than Rice )

He could have just kept his mouth shut or given some comment about not really knowing a goddamned thing about how hard Randy Moss works. I doubt he really knows just how much work Moss has or hasn't put in anyway. But no, he has to make statement about how hard he worked at his craft, thus reassuring his superiority in his own mind. It is a weak thing to say coming from the guy already known as the GOAT at his position.

obviously guys like Randy Moss, Marvin harrison, Andre Johnson are all "better players" but there was something about watching driver live....it was just a whole different experience than seeing him on tv. he just really grabbed your attention where you wanted to watch him every play.

This is not Steve Williams who carries other dudes' clubs around for a living, this is Jerry fricking Rice. He has more than earned the right to voice his opinion on anything football related, especially when it concerns wide receivers.

I don't know about "weak," but Jerry has always had a chip on his shoulder--had a borderline inferiority complex. But it's actually what drove him and made him great.

Exactly, and it comes through loud and clear in his comments on Moss. It is a little sad to see considering he is widely considered the GOAT. That was my only point. This isn't Mercury Morris, it's Jerry Rice.

Jerry, you are the greatest ever at your position. There is no need to run down any other player ever, and certainly no reason to take Randy Moss' career as a "slap in your face".
