So, originally, you had the Jets, Nets, and Mets. All three were the "second" team in metro NY. When the Islanders came about in 72, they wanted to be called the Veterans, or, Vets. Nets, Mets, Jets, Vets. The NHL laughed and said no. So, they went with Islanders, but the name of their arena? Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
