The thing is they aren't just "random committee members". One was Gene Smith, the OSU Athletic Director...very intelligent guy who has been involved in collegiate athletics for most of his life.

Too much collusion for the ESPN guys to be a part of this, of course it also looks bad for conference commissioners to be choosing who gets an at-large. I'd just imagine the Big East, ACC, and SEC would be getting more at larges than the Big12 since ESPN and ABC showed more of those conferences.

Basketball Prospectus had an interesting suggestion: have one committe name the 65 teams and then have a group of analysts seed those 65 teams and build the bracket. I think there really are two different sets of expertise for naming the field and seeding the field, so I think that would be interesting at the very least.
