Team had a weird year. You normally don't see a team win as many games as they did without a decent amount of luck. They were pretty much the unluckiest team in baseball through like mid August

‘61 Tigers won 101 games but still finished 8 games behind the Yankees

No. Win your division. The rules are clear. The one-game wild card was put in to try to make it harder for wild cards. It’s not fool proof but the wild cards have an extra obstacle. As it should be. I like 1 game better than 3. The 2004-05 Cardinals easily won their division both years and had to play the division rival Astros in both NLCS and lost in ‘05. The Cards were the better team in the regular season both years. At least giving the wild card another obstacle makes that harder to happen.

Personally, I wish there were no wild cards and you either win your division or you stay home. But unfortunately, we’re never going back to 1993.

Don’t finish second and you don’t have to worry about the wild-card game.

Would you feel differently if it were the 106-win Giants playing in the wild card and the 107-win Dodgers had won the West?

No, it was put there to make money. A way to make it "fair" would be to have a 3 game series to determine the wildcard if they insist on this play-in thing. Baseball is not a sport where winner-take-all makes sense. There's a reason they play 162 game seasons.

Making it harder to win for wildcards meant they were paired with the team with the best winning percentage on the road in a series, not adding another wild card team to, potentially, reward that team with an even worse record with a playoff birth.

Good to know. So am I. See my post above about the 2004-05 Astros.

You’re right it was about the money and I misspoke. My point was that I like that wild cards have an extra obstacle. I also liked it more when baseball was more about the 162 and that teams either won their league before 1969 or their division from 1969-93 to get into the playoffs. There were no second-place teams in the postseason and I liked that.

Prepare to be disappointed when they expand to 32 teams with 12 playoff spots in a few years.

Changing the system would be lame AF. I enjoy the current model.

Yes. For years MLB, NBA, and the NHL all had 30 teams. MLB had 8 total playoff teams and the NBA and NHL had 16. Now it's 10/16 , but I still feel like the MLB post season is too small. Going to 16 feels like it's too much, nut maybe it could work. At a minimum the Wildcard should be a 3 game series.

winning your division shouldn't be the deciding factor

This is also true. It was BS the 11-5 Saints had to go to the 7-9 Seahawks back in 2010 simply because the Seahawks won that division.
