You're eligible to play varsity as a freshman. Heck, in some schools, you can start varsity as a 7th grader.
And if you don't see how the statement 'when he was a sophomore, he was relegated to JV duties' differs in its meaning from the blanket 'he got cut from his high school team' (implication he didn't play through all of high school), then I would question your critical reading abilities to a small degree.
