I don't care what Bama is doing now - great for them.

It just bothers me when people bring up 70's Bama and claim some GOAT status...not to mention their "shared titles" with TWO TEAMS THAT BEAT THEM that YEAR and laid claim to the title!

1973 Notre Dame and 1978 USC!!!!!

But all you hear about is their record:

From 1971 to 1981 Alabama had a great record of 116-15-1 (88%) in 132 games.

From Alabama's Bowl game in 1967 to their season opener in 1975,they played only 12 games against Non-Southern teams.

Bama won only 2 of the 12 games
vs Non-Southern teams (i.e. that weren't SEC ALL-WHITE) going 2-9-1.

1967 Texas A&M 7-4 (Lost 20-16)
1968 Missouri 8-3 (Lost 35-10)
1969 Colordado 8-3 (Lost 47-33)
1970 USC 6-4-1 (Lost 42-21)
1970 Oklahoma 7-4-1 (Tie 24-24)
1971 @USC 6-4-1 (Won 17-10)
1971 Nebraska 13-0 (Lost 38-6)
1972 Texas 10-1 (Lost 17-13)
1973 California 4-7 (Won 66-0)
1973 Notre Dame 11-0 (Lost 24-23)
1974 Notre Dame 10-2 (Lost 13-11)
1975 Missouri 6-5 (Lost 20-7)

...not to mention 1978 USC 24 Bama 14.

Would still be Bama by the end of the decade, even if the run ended today. No one else is gonna win 3 out of 4 this decade

Well, you should have been up more than 12-3 before USC rallied in the 4th and took over.

Too much running and LSU played a goal-line D the entire game to stop White.

Luckily USC decided to pass in the 4th.

USC went on to lose to an unranked Arizona team while Alabama went on to beat the #1 team in the land in a 1 vs. 2 match-up in post-season play. Alabama was #2 in BOTH polls that night and everyone figured they would be the unanimous national champions of 1978, despite the early season loss to #3 USC. When the Coaches selected USC over Alabama in there was quite a bit of controversy. The vote was very close, with USC beating out Alabama by only a few points. When the AP released their poll the very next day, Alabama was your runaway national champion. Their vote wasn't close at all.

Here's a good video from the era which captures the feeling of that particular event:
