meh, that's hard to tell.

exactly. When people take the definition of the award seriously, it still leaves things for interpretation.
Ranter emphasized valuable and I've heard this arguments a lot...valuable to what? His team's playoff chances? His team even being considered a half decent major league team?

TEIXEIRA GIVES THE YANKEES 14 MORE WINS A YEAR STRICTLY WITH HIS DEFENSE AT 1ST BASE

They would be pretty shitty.
But how I look at it is if you take Tex off the Yankees, they go from home field advantage throughout the playoffs to fighting for the AL East right now. Same thing for guys like Morales and Cabrera, if you take them off their team, it changes wheter or not they make the playoffs.
If you take Mauer off the Twins it just changes how far below .500 they are and has no impact on the playoffs.

An RBI happens because of something else happening. What a batter does in his at bat shouldn't be dependent of anything else.
I get it fine. This is blown out of proportion.
I was responding to the initial poster who I thought was implying that there isn't a catcher in baseball that can touch Mauer's offensive numbers career wise. That isn't true.
He meant relative to this year. To which I can't disagree.
I still think Carl Crawford should win the MVP.

I hear Tex saves as many runs as he produces

Catchers go through hell behind the plate. I think he'd be an even better hitter if he was playing 1st base or anywhere else.

If you put Mauer at 1B for the Yankees they get better.

His 54 stolen bases are sick but meh

you're right, but what does this have to do with Mauer?
He plays for the team he was drafted by and has no choice in the matter. How is it his fault that Tex has more service time and was able to pick the team he plays for?
Another argument is just flop the two players (and I hate these kinds of hypotheticals, but for the sake of argument...) would the Yankees be better with Mauer at catcher an average 1B? Would the Twins be better with Tex at first, and an average catcher?
The last word is Player. Singular.

How much of a difference does a catcher's ability to call a game really make? You hear about guys like Pudge calling all fastballs with runners on to pump up his CS% but in the grand scheme of things does it really make a difference?

I'm not saying Tex is a better player. Mauer has been by far the best player in the AL. But that's not the award.
I just think leading your team the best record is more valuable than leading your team to a 80-82 record instead of a 65-97 record when you miss the playoffs either way.

He'll also score 100, drive in 85, hit .310+, has a shot at 200 hits and likely win a GG.

Yea, it's all about interpretation. But Mauer is more valuable to his team than any other player in the American League.
Posted on 8/19/09 at 1:22 am to 1ranter1
Yankees have had a medicore 1B for years, his name was Jason.

It's huge and I can't really overstate it.

I think you just listed off the minimums for Mauer's season already. And he missed April.

Mauer missed the beginning of the year and still has only 6 less runs scored than Crawford and 10 less hits.
