Bases loaded when player comes to the plate = runs scored. Player coming to the plate had nothing to do with guys being on base before him.

If he's hitting .375 then he's always on base, thus he's bound to be driven in. That helps your team win games.. Fail, fail, fail.

Yeah, if the Twins make the playoffs

I'm saying he should win it either way. But I realize Teixeira will win it just because the award is a joke.

Actually, the stat Mauer is best at, average, is one of the least important stats in baseball.

agreed. Doesn't change what you wrote though. BTW, he also has 25 Hrs after missing a month.

Not close to the most important category. Depends on many factors that are out of the player's control (where does the manager put him in the lineup, is his team terrible or great offensively for two).

Minnesota = 8th in Team batting.
Atlanta = 21st.

Mauer hits the 3 hole, protected by a former MVP in his prime.

McCann hits 4 behind aging Chip and ahead of Garrett Anderson.

I think you can definitely argue Mauer gets plenty of protection, plays in a better lineup in the American league - which already equals more chances to drive in runs.

Mauer can go 3 for 4 all day and drive in no one. He could hit .500 and help his team win zero games.

It won't happen. But it's statistically possible.

It's not statistically possible for a guy to drive in runs and not contribute to wins.

individual awards that have anything to do with whether or not the team was in the playoffs bug me to no end. I get furious thinking about it.

If a player is better than another player, that's all that counts.

Since you do have to score runs to win games,
Mauer RC/27: 11.07 wRC: 93.1
McCann RC/27: 5.92 wRC: 58.4

doesn't make a lick of difference

They should change it from MVP to Player of the Year to avoid confusion.

what aren't you getting here.

An RBI happens because of something else happening. What a batter does in his at bat shouldn't be dependent of anything else.

fwiw, the last two nights Mauer has had Casilla and Harris as his protection. I'll wait while the results from the last two nights are looked up.

Then Mauer would win easily.

However, I can't see giving the most VALUABLE player to a guy that plays on a team under .500. But that's just my opinion on what MVP means.

So then Randy Winn is better than Ichiro?

Yeah, but think about how bad the Twins would be without him.

If Mauer played a different position, would he be hitting closer to .400?

Whatever player is worth the most amount of wins to a team is the MVP. That's Mauer in the AL.
