I do think there's an element to where if it does not give the offensive player an advantage that they won't whistle the violation even if it's obvious.

Look Jordan is the goat but let’s not pretend he didn’t basically usher in the age of carrying/palming not being called. Used to be you had to bounce the ball with your hand on top of it, but Jordan made carrying/palming look so damn cool that they didn’t call it.

The ability to carry the ball
is just as problematic for defenders as traveling. Allows you to change directions, hesitate, crossover in a way you simply can’t do when dribbling with hand on top of ball like the original rules of basketball. Breaking ankles is cool though so carrying stays.
