No one outside Ascension Parish knows how to pronounce St. Amant, Martinez, Cointmont, Savoy, or Gonzales either.

Gonzales is an interesting one here. Unless you are making a distinction between the "gun" and "gon" sound which is pretty similar in speech I have never noticed anything unusual about the pronunciation from an "outsiders" POV. The rest are clearly different from the way most outside of the region would pronounce them.

I loved going up to North LA, and them always calling us the Saint Uh-mant Gators. They always struggled with our last names as well. They’d ask me to pronounce every last name on our roster, when I’d bring the lineup to the pressbox.

Cointmont
I'm pretty savvy with the names, but I still don't know how to say this one. And I work with some of those baws. It's also crazy how everyone in the AP spells Breaux incorrectly.

Gun-zal-is with the emphasis on the first syllable verses gone-Zal-es with the emphasis on the second syllable.

I went to law school with a Sanchez from south Louisiana. There was another student from California who grew up in Mexico who saw the last name on the student roster and was excited to meet another hispanic student at the school. The Californian was definitely caught off guard when the two finally met and Sanchez was an uber white coonass who spoke more French than Spanish. The Californian learned a lot about Islanos in Louisiana that day.
