Most bad calls aren't gambling related but expect a huge surge in refs working with gamblers to rig outcomes in the near future. Even a little of that can ruin sports.
It is pretty obvious this has been going on for decades now, especially in the NFL and the SEC.
Replay makes it harder to hide, but my favorite is when they are clearly rigging a game and the former Ref comes on TV and tries to tell you what you are seeing isn't real.

LSU didn’t deserve to win, but Vandy held on every running play against LSU.
I really would like that entire crew investigated on their financials for gambling issues.

That game really was hilarious and a perfect example of how the SEC has been rigging games for decades. LSU was called for several holds, two of which were nowhere close to what Vandy was doing.
Vandy wasn't going to lose that game no matter what and the storyline was being laid out from the start.
As an LSU fan, I was happy because that loss, along with aTm, helped get BK out. You are also correct in the LSU wasn't going to win regardless thanks to Nuss and Baker, but the obvious game fixing from the refs was blatant. Had they called it fairly, Vandy still wins but likely by 3 on their last drive. LSU's defense would have blown it.

I would imagine refs don't get paid shite compared to everyone else involved.
$2,500 a game with travel and per diem covered for FBS/FCS officials for a part time gig.
Veteran nfl officials are earning 6 figures
