When did they start doing these? Why?
i've never seen it on any other TV show. Just think it is an interesting way to show Mike and Tony and the banter

They've done that since the show started.

They use to do one every segment but cut back to the first one. When they first started I thought it was a gaffe and was cringing thinking they were going to say something bad not knowing the cameras were on. This was around the time Tony got suspended for making comments about Hannah Storm too.

Yup I stopped watching the show about two years ago and it was happening then

It's supposed to show that these two great friends would be having this convo regardless of the cameras. Their chemistry is what sells the show.

I love the show but Wilbon always finds a way to bring up minority issues (The big bad BCS is keeping small schools like Boise St. down, more needs to be done regarding the Rooney Rule, getting outraged if you call a black athlete who gets in a fight a thug/punk, etc.) He's almost as bad as Jason Whitlock and Bhami Jones. When he's not on a race trip, he is very entertaining. Kornheiser is like the sports version of Larry David.

Its just an opportunity to get your attention before they run another couple of commercials. The good old days, when VCRs had a pause that only lasted for three minutes before it shut down. They would be obsolete today if we still used them.

I love the show as well as Inside the NBA because the guys are real and genuine. They are not reading off a cue-card and doing the fake journalistic head movements and over-exaggerated hand motions.

It's not like it's completely spontaneous and they have no idea when they're on air/acting natural. It's planned/scripted just like the rest of the show. Still a good concept though......wish more shows would do something similar.

Please change that to TV personality. He quit being a journalist a long time ago. Nothing wrong with that, but he is no longer a journalist.

The point is to grab your attention to the next commercial. You hear Mike or Tony's voice and perk up, and then the next you know you are watching Brett Favre slinging it in Wranglers.
