Howson has tried to build this team from the draft up, and it hasn't worked.

Our scouting has always sucked, for some reason. We've had one great first round draft pick (even though we've drafted in the top 10 every year but one), and it was when it was the #1 overall pick (Nash). The rest have either been average players (Klesla, Leclaire), complete busts (Picard, Brule), talented Russians with horrible attitudes, leading to failure (Zherdev, Filatov), good players the jury's still not quite in on (Brassard, Voracek), or too early to judge (Moore, Johansen). But of 9 top ten picks we can judge, we've only hit big on one? That's a joke.

We need at least ONE proven guy that can be our leader and take the pressure off of Nash. We also need a big time center that we have NEVER had.

Agree. Like I mentioned in the post above, I really like Vermette and Umberger. I think they're great leaders and are very underrated, and given that you probably won't get much (for their worth, IMO) in return for a trade, you have to keep them. But they're still not stars. We have never had ANY stars (other than Nash) in their prime here. Foote and Fedorov were the closest things, but they were washed up when they were here.

quote:

We just need to give up some of these young guys that can be good, for players that ARE good.

Agree. That's why I said Voracek and Brassard need to be looked at being traded. I like both of them (just got a Voracek third jersey, in fact), but the fact is, I don't know if they'll ever be elite. However, there are probably at least a few teams out there that would be willing to take a chance on them, as they are both younger than 24 years old, and were top 10 picks. A team might be willing to give up a proven guy that's really good (probably not great, though) in his prime for one of Voracek or Brassard, in the hope they eventually live up to their billing.

One other thing was I hated the Johansen pick in this year's draft (I think you and I actually had a discussion about it at the time). I get he may finally be the #1 center you're looking for, but you have to win now. You're not in a position like a Detroit, where you're currently winning. Heck, you're not even an Edmonton, who, while completely sucking right now, had recent playoff success, and also a fanbase that will always be there, so you can go slow. The Jackets are in a situation where the fanbase is slowly dying. You have to win NOW. A guy like Cam Fowler would have been able to come in right away and play defense for us and contribute, like he is in Anaheim (ironically he had three assists against us a few weeks ago). Even if Johansen does become a legit #1 center (which is a huge assumption, since he's a big project, who needs a lot of refining), it won't be for a good four or five years. You don't have that long.

Sorry for the REALLY long post, just wanted to vent.

You all need a bunch of old guys like the Wings are.

I think the Red Wings are about the only sports team that seems to make Michigan proud about every year. We used to have the Wolverines.

Ode to Hockey

Here is your page 2. Dont say a Michigan guy never did anything for ya!

EDIT: Oops got beat to the punch. Its the thought that counts right?

You're totally right about Johansen and we def talked about this with you and I think we agreed at the time.

We need to win games in the playoffs. Give the fans ONE series in Nationwide where we win games. That Detroit game was ROCKING two years ago in the playoffs and we were down 3-0 and everyone knew we weren't gonna win the series.

We, the fans, have supported this team from the beginning and still are honestly with very little in return. I don't know the exact answer, but it has to happen fast. This isn't like the Browns where people are deep seated life long fans. The CBJ is only 10 years old.

GIVE US SOMETHING TO CHEER FOR! I LOVE GOING TO GAMES THEY ARE SO MUCH FUN!

I honestly don't know how your guys (especially Lidstrom) do it. It defies logic. I remember ten years ago, when you were dominating us as we entered the league, I told myself that it was OK, because soon the Jackets' top ten picks would become great, and Shanahan, Yzerman, Fedorov, etc would get old and retire and you'd start sucking.

They had/have young talent too.

They are a great mix that keeps rebuilding. They are the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NHL imo.

They have great scouting. That's been a huge key. Guys like Datsyuk and Zetterberg were late round picks. They should have never played in the NHL, let alone be consistent regulars, let alone be top line forwards, let alone be superstars in the league.

I dont know how the older guys do it either. I think hockey is probably the hardest sport on the human body...

I agree, there is nothing like a rocking hockey rink!

I've still not been to one playoff game, and we have season tickets (I couldn't go to either of the two home games, due to my schedule). I was in 3rd grade the first season and I'm in college now, and they've made the playoffs one time (in a league where over 50% of the teams make it into the playoffs). Making the playoffs itself isn't even a big deal to most teams. I remember Detroit fans laughing at the atmosphere that we had in Game 4 in our series against them (i.e. it was "too loud/crazy" for a first round playoff game), given that a first round series is not just an expectation, but a guarantee. And for us, we absolutely crave it. It's nuts.

And you're right, if wins don't come soon, the fanbase will dwindle, and ultimately (sadly) the franchise will have to move. I remember the 2nd year, the Jackets sold out EVERY game (even crappy ones such as Tuesday night versus Calgary). People were excited to see the new arena, people were excited to see NHL hockey. Now, people have been to numerous games. They've seen the arena inside and out, they've watched all the different teams pass through. They don't just care to see a hockey team anymore, they want to see a WINNING hockey team. You could get away with a bad club those first few years, people would still come. Now, they won't unless you win.

Arena was rocking. Great atmosphere, always fun to beat the Wings. Going to the game tomorrow night in Detroit, too. Went to Jackets at Bruins last year, and Bruins fans were great, but I have a feeling the Wings fans won't be as hospitable.

I think you should be fine, I don't think Red Wing fans will batter you too much, they usually don't. In regards to the Joe, you will probably be surprised at the various amount of random empty seats around the arena, something that has always pissed me off for us to claim to be
"Hockeytown".

That being said, Michigan football and the Detroit Red Wings are the two teams that I follow the most and support.

Wait dont you have one of the best young goalies in the league? Mason will eventually dominate...here's a hint for drafting...when the talent levels are equal and its between a North American and a European always draft the N.Am player...they dont disappear in the playoffs and you never have to question their heart and determination...

I think they said tonight's a sellout, which will be cool. Going to eat at "Hockeytown" restaurant, also, which should be fun. I'm not too worried about Red Wings fans on the whole, but there will probably be a few drunks that hate everything Ohio that I might have to watch out for. Still, no big deal.

Mason played great last night. He's very inconsistent. I don't like his mentality much, to be honest. I think he's got the skills, but sometimes I think he lacks the drive and determination. Still, though, repping the sig.

What are your defensive pairings? Who blocks the most shots? Stay at home defencemen or puck movers?
