Coaching 6 Year Old Baseball - Need Ideas

I told the boys that if they were good at practice, we would do something fun at the end of that practice. Our first one was Tuesday and we did a relay race by rounding the bases. They loved it.
Can't do the same thing every practice, so I ask you MSB, do you have any ideas?
It's coaches pitch fwiw.

I've never had fun at a baseball practice...
I can't think of anything for you.

At 6 years old, they need to have fun. We only do fun stuff if they are good. At this age, their attention span is so short that you have to keep them busy. I've also found breaking into small groups helps.

Home run derby. You're the only one that hits. Let them shag.

After doing some google searches I found a pretty good idea. Use tennis balls to teach them to catch. Should get them over the fear of the ball.
Thinking about handing out a tennis ball to each kid. I've got a bunch of old ones laying around.

I coach 5-6 year olds and we have done a few things. Put a bucket at home plate and get the kids in cf. Have a competition to see who can make it in the bucket. Do 2-3 rounds of it. We let the kids who make it go first in batting practice. Another drill we use is getting your 1b on 1st and everyone else behind 3rd. Have them field and throw it over to 3rd. The kids who make throws that don't get by your 1b get to hit first.
We also occasionally play kick ball without throwing the ball at someone. It's fun to them and it gets them thinking about what base to run to, who to tag, ect. The more dads you have helping during practice, the better. Splitting them up in small groups will help w/their attention span.

Brilliant.

You mean to tell me you got kids throwing home from the outfield?
I was basically thinking, anything in the outfield goes to 2nd. Infield always goes to 1st.

Pop ups, baserunning and lots of sugar is what got my team 2nd place.

Rent a dunking booth and have them work on their throwing accuracy.

break them into teams and have them do relay throws from outfield to home. First team to go there and back wins. While doing this, teach them how to use their feet while throwing. This will also teach them to get the ball out of their hands quick

My teams would stage all kind of competitions for fun.
You can have a throwing relay from home to the center field fence and back, that teaches how to receive and throw. Our kids loved that one.
We had consecutive fly ball catching contests.
We had "spectacular catch" practice - line up on the right field foul line, hit a fly ball to right center, have them catch on the run. You can control the degree of difficulty.
We had contests for the catchers at blocking bad pitches.
We had teams playing "21" in the outfield - you score one point for catching a fly ball, one point for an accurate throw back in - first team to 21 wins.
Kids love rundown practice.
Games of one-base are fun.
Have a longest hit competition.
See who can bunt and hit targets down the line.
set up a trash can on its side at 2b and see who can throw it into the opening from home plate. (will help you identify a future catcher)
Have groups of four compete to see how fast they can throw the ball around the diamond. You can do it once around, then reverse it for fun. They love this one. Anything with a stopwatch they go nuts over.
You are right to focus on fun. Remember that six year olds aren't going to be very disciplined or attentive for more than 10 seconds at a time. Keep them moving, keep practices short and to the point.

One Base - We played this as a kid if we didn't have a lot of players or space to play.
The setup:
Home plate and second base (shorten it for younger players) are the only bases.
Fielders can play anywhere they want.
One person pitches, or hit off a tee. Your choice.
The rules: basically the same as baseball, just with one base and home plate.
When the batter hits the ball, he is forced at the base. If the fielders get the ball there before he does, he's out. If he's safe, when the next batter hits the ball, he is forced at home.
The hitter can try for a "home run" by running to the base and then to home before the throw gets there. The fielding team will have to tag him out.
That's all there is to it. All other rules are the same as baseball.
It's a fun game. I always enjoyed playing it.

Yeah, and all but two of them are 5, not 6. The field is smaller and the ball rolls. We tried putting it at the pitchers mound but they throw harder than you think.

Only had 1 practice and I worked with hitting for the most of it. Saturday I'll see who my strong arms are and who can catch.
