The Browns would've selected Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright at No. 22 over quarterback Brandon Weeden if he had been there, and told Colt McCoy on draft day that they weren't going to draft a quarterback in the first round, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

"We liked Kendall and there were a couple of guys that we liked, but a quarterback is a quarterback, which I think that outweighs everything, at least in our opinion,'' said Browns general manager Tom Heckert.

Asked if he would've taken Wright, Heckert said, “We didn’t have to make that decision. Brandon was by far the best player for us. There wasn't really even an afterthought. As soon as a couple of guys went, we knew we were going to take him.''

The Browns had told McCoy and the media all offseason that they were moving forward with McCoy as their starter and that they'd surround him with talent.

Pretty much this. Peyton Manning couldn't take that team to the playoffs with all the holes.

Browns have a great draft so far. Weeden is a very good QB, who cares about age if you can still get another at least 5 years out of him? Keep Colt there and let him grow and mature. Not to mention Weeden will have Richardson to ride with a very good o-line and defense. All they have to do is grab a Stephen Hill or Reuben Randle and they're a whole new team ready to fight for the division.

So they are a rookie RB, QB, and WR away from winning the division? Nice.

No, not really.

You are hallucinating if you see the Browns fighting for the division next year.

Btw, the Browns have had a terrible draft thus far.

First they give up a 4th, 6th & 7th Round Draft Picks to move up one spot & pick a player that was going to be there at their next pick anyway (Minnesota bluffed them something fierce). And, even though Richardson is a Great RB, he's still just a RB & it's just plain unnecessary to use a #3 pick on any RB in today's NFL.

Then they use their second pick on a QB whose already past his athletic prime when they still had much bigger needs they could've focused on then the marginal (if that) upgrade he gives them over McCoy for the next few years.

A great draft so far? Now THAT is funny.

frick Heckert. I hate the Weeden pick. Colt should have had the job this year and we should have taken Hill with the 22.

fricking terrible pick. McCoy earned another shot with some weapons to throw to imo. Lousy recievers and an NFL high 33 (more like 50) drops last year.

Ive been pissed all night!

let me see if i understand correctly: richardson, weeden and stephen hill are all the browns need to be competitive in the afc north?

brb weeden ran a sandlot offense in college, never had to read a defense, will have strong learning curve
brb getting bluffed by the vikings on draft day

They had 13 picks in this years draft. Take those away an they still have 10 picks. 3 more than the usual team.
And no, I don't think it was definite TRich would have still been there. Tampa could have very easily traded up to get him as well.
You need a workhorse RB especially in the AFC north and they have no one right now.

If you're so worked up about his age, who else would you have taken? They said Wright wasn't there and that's who they wanted. You're depending on McCoy to run your offense? Really?
They're O-line is very good, they already have a top 10 defense. They're offense was miserable, that was clearly the focus. If they get a playmaking WR in Hill or Randle I don't see how you can't like where they're headed.

Unless they hand the job to Weeden, I dont see him beating out Colt period.

Should have taken Glenn or someone to help protect Colt instead of another Qb. Then work on getting some WR's for the man to throw to if you want to win. Hell I'd have looked about trading for a QB before I went and drafted Weeden.

I still can't believe that Browns were so fricking stupid to move up 1 spot. Hello!! If the Vikings wanted Richardson, they would have just fricking taken him at 3. And nobody else was trading up to take a RB at 3. Bunch of dumbasses. But I actually like the Wheeden pick.

Once again, the Vikings said today they were fielding calls for the #3 pick all yesterday. Tampa obviously needed a RB and could have very easily moved up an taken him. Cleveland had 13 PICKS in this draft. 13. They used extra picks to make sure they got the player they wanted. They still have/had 10 total.
